I need to learn Empi for my 1st kyu (2nd Black tip) in Go-Kan Ryu. We do not use weapons. Does anyone know the bunkai of the jump and shuto uke near the end of the kata

Due to a very intelligent guy whose first name is Elmar, I always consider MY jump to actually be MY OPPONENT flying as I throw him. In Empi at the end there is a grab (I think to the top collar and inside thigh) to a jump spin. THe bunkai has the kata performer staying on the ground.

Thanks Elmar Schlesmeier!

Speaking with many GKR karateka I was under the impression that GKR does not do bunkai?

Is GKR joining the rest of the world and starting to do bunkai with their katas now?

A couple of books that might help you get some ideas are Aiden Trimble's Kata Applications and Nakayama's Best Karate vol 7. The main application that I know of that move is grabbing your opponent by the crotch and throat and throwing them over your shoulder or to the side.

Hi innocui

I didn't realise that it was a grading requirement in Go Kan Ryu to know any bunkai.

If you ask me I doubt there is any realistic bunkai for this movement - I reckon its a modern affectation to the kata, the original will probably have looked quite different so the bunkai will likely have been lost.
