Jiffy
Hi Guys,In one of the styles we teach, we don't use a Gi. The uniform is just a polo shirt with a badge, track pants and shoes. This was done to get as close to street wear as possible.see photohttp://users.esc.net.au/~aacd/images/photos/ichf_grading.jpgAnyway, when we started the system, we didn't want to have belts due to the nature of the dress, but now we are getting to the point where we want to be able to identify peoples grades easily. The only two options we have really come up with is some sort of colour marking on the colar, or some sort of silk sash.Does anyone else have a similar scenario or can think of another option? The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it's open.
karatekid1975
I'm in a belt system with both arts, but I had a cool idea. Well it kinda came from your post. You guys wear polo shirts, so how about colored stripes on your colar or opposite of your patch. You don't have to have a lot of them, just a few colors (white, green, brown, black ... what we have in jujitsu). Just enough to show where you are. There are these iron on stripes they have for belts that you can use for your shirts. That would work, I think. Just an idea for ya. AngelaG
I've trained in training trousers and aT-shirt, and if people wanted to wear their karate belt they were welcome to. It works fine, and means it won't cost too much or have to replace the T-Shirt when you grade. I know that I love having different shirts, and I'm sure that if you ask, the students wouldn't mind the extra cost if it's done nice (and the shirts you have look nice so it shouldn't be an issue)
italian_guy
In my previous JKD school we used a different color in the symbol on the shirt.
tufrthanu
Perhaps you could create colored pips for the shirt collar. Like a dime sized cloth dot that could be attached with velcro. This could also be done with colored stripes on the sleeves. Long Live the Fighters!
ArmorOfGod
Have you considered silicone wrist bands?Like these. They come in loads of colours and are 'training friendly'.Just a thought.DCMS.I really like this idea.Century martial arts has some here:http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=12337&langId=-1&categoryId=13501&top=ybut the Century ones look a little silly. You could simply put a small colored iron on star like these:http://www.martialartssupermarket.com/index.cfm?action=showProd&subid=484You could put those on the sleeves of the shirts. They are very inexpensive and can be bought at local outlet stores that have a sewing section.AoG
ArmorOfGod
http://www.karatedepot.com/cl-ac-20.htmlThose are chevron patches. They would be perfect for the sleeves and wouldn't require removing when new rank was attained. You could do different colors for rank, or multiple chevrons for higher rank.AoG
Texman
I like the wrist band idea because it could actually substitute for a watch which you might be wearing in street cloths. However I'd be interested to know why you think you need grades. It looks like a small enough group that everyone would know where everyone else is in terms of skill and surely part of learning street techniques is getting rid of the trappings because a 'black belt' means nothing when it comes down to defending yourself.
