Atton Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Hey, first time posting been reading round and seen a few people say that JKD is better if you have done a MA before hand. Ive been training in JKD concepts and Kali (we kind of do it in the same class depends on what the instructor wants to do).Im finding it very very enjoyable. But this is my first MA ive learned. We tend to learn a lot more Jun Fan and Kali and grappling than most others. We touch on others sometimes but mostly Jun Fan.Just want to get some feedback about why some say it is better to have done another MA beforehand before starting JKD?
BLOWN Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 I've been training in JKD aswell. I gues most people will say that it's best because you 'use whats useful and discard the useless'. You use whatever works for you which makes it the best MA for YOU.I've seen some say that all MA's can be considered JKD because in other styles, you usually only use whats best for you and disregard what doesn't work for you. Which seems to be the main concept of JKD.Just my .02-Ray -Pain Is Weakness Leaving The Body.-It's Not The Size Of The Dog In The Fight, But The Size Of The Fight In The Dog.

Atton Posted February 21, 2006 Author Posted February 21, 2006 I suppose your right about other martial arts being "JKD". In JKD we learn what Bruce Lee considered useful to HIM and from that we can take what we feel is useful to US and discard what we feel isnt.We are all different and that should be reflected in what we take from a MA and what aspects of any MA is useful to US.Thnx for the feedback.
italian_guy Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I did other arts before starting JKD, it helped somehow but I also know people doing JKD as their first MA and they are doing ok.
Jay Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 if you have done something similar it always helps some techniques are always going to be related. For example Its easier to learn Physics once your good at maths although extra work is needed to learn the new stuff The key to everything is continuity achieved by discipline.
Spirit At Choice Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Do you learn a set system? How can you pass along an art that "discards" techniques. (I'm a total newbie to MA, if you didn't guess.) White belt mind. Black belt heart....Rejoice and be glad!
Karateka_latino Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Im a black belt in Karate and i just started to train in Jun Fan Gung Fu/JKD with another black belt and a brown belt..I dont have too many problems adjusting my body to the fluidity of JKD.. but my other 2 partners do have problems.. To me, it depends on the individual
Atton Posted February 26, 2006 Author Posted February 26, 2006 Yeah i suppose doing any MA before starting a new MA is going to be helpful. But we all have to start somewhere.
