How many times a week do you train in martial arts?

Hello,

I currently train 3 times a week. The two lessons in the week are hard physically, leaving your t-shirt wet through. We mainly do silat, kali, boxing, thai boxing, wing chun, grappling and train the reverse punch alot. On saturday I have a weapons class where we do single stick, double stick and knife work, which is not physically demanding. In the week classes are held mon, tues, wed and thurs. I usually go mon and thurs to leave a 2 day gap in between coz sometimes my body aches after the monday session.

However recently I have not been aching too much and i might try going 4 times a week including Saturdays. I have been training since october and I asked my teacher when I first started about going to every lesson! He said that would probably be overtraining. How many times do you guys/gals train a week?

Physically you may overtrain yourself, which could have an effect on your outlook, and may burn you out in the long run.

However, mentally, one should always be training, one way or the other.

Starting out with 2 or 3 days a week sounds great. Then add a day every six months, until you get to 6 days a week.

Reserve the 7th day for rest, stretching, and study, and reflection on those things most important to you.

Those are my humble thoughts, others will vary.

I go 4 days a week (three for TKD, one for Jujitsu). When I did TSD, I went 6 days a week as a beginner. I felt that was too much (with a full time job and all). I cut it down to 4 and kept it like that for the time that I studied TSD and it worked out great.

Like it was mentioned above, becareful not to overtrain. You can burn youself and/or your body out. I almost did in the beginning. So I picked classes that I have a day off in between each class. Except for saturdays when I do both TKD and Jujitsu. Even that can get a bit rough (depending on what we do in Jujitsu).

During the weekends i like to train again as long as possible so that could be any amount of time depending on other stuff. Formal classes are wed and friday, i do grapple defense with my instructor on sat for 1 hour and on sundays are free workouts(2hours).

I do five, 1 hour classes a week. Then there is also kickboxing and Tae bo classes I go to for the cardio.

I do train at home everyday, whether it be stretching, practice kata physically, or training mentally.

Everyday except Sunday. Or unless I am swamped with work, appointments, &c.

I'm interested to know what you train for grapple defense.

Myself, I'm currently doing shootwrestling twice a week (3 hours total) and weight lifting 3 to 4 times a week (3-5 hours total) plus the occasional bag work to keep up my striking.
