ArmorOfGod
I have been wearing the same black belt for about 10 years now, and it looks almost brand new.How do some people get those belts that look like they are falling apart? Is it a special type of belt that wears down, or are they doing something to the belts to make them wear down faster (like sandpaper)?AoG
ps1
Usually the worn belts you see are made with a cotton inside, not unlike a white belt. Then the outer layer is made of black satin. Because it's satin, it wears down more quickly. The most famous company that makes them is Tokaido. They're very expensive as far as belts go. Usually around $50. I wear one because it's what I was given by my instructor when he promoted me. In turn...I give one to all of the students I promote to black. On a note of ettiquite. I do not wear my worn out belt in public (for demos or tourneys ect...). I only wear it in my school. Any other time I wear one that looks more presentable. ps1
Also, I do know of people who purposely wear theirs out. "It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenius."
chitobandito
I had a close friend tell me that he tied his belt to the car and dragged it to get that worn look true story
JWLuiza
Yeah, I bought a Tokaido and it is "HEAVY". A cotton belt doesn't feel right anymore!
Sensei Rick
Wow, I had my instuctor drag ME behind him on the ground, I never thought about just dragging the belt. Mine wore out from practice, which is all i can suggest you do. Black belts need to study. Teachers need to study. Jiffy
For most people, it just wears down because of training. I've had mine for about 7 years now, and it's still in pretty good condition... shows I don't train enough! There have however been cases of people deliberately wearing them down, but that's quite a lame excersize really. ShadowFox
Why would a person want to wear down their belts? I mean I went through a lot of training to get to that rank of belt and I think look tacky a worn belt. But I guess if you asking how tough training, sand paper, or draging it around would do the trick "Martial Arts is kinda like yin and yang when you think about it; it 50% physical and 50% mental"
Nurvingiel
Also, I do know of people who purposely wear theirs out.We wear layered cotton belts (the typical kind) in our style for all levels including black. Some people have very worn belts because when they achieve a higher dan (level) of black belt, they rip a small strip off it. I'm not sure exactly how it's done. This wears the belt down, and the frayed edge probably allows the cotton to wear more readily than an unmangled belt. Our style's sensei, and a few senior senseis, have more white than black on their belt.I like the symbology of having a mostly white belt at the end, just like we did at the beginning. Chitobandito, that's awesome! Tell your buddy about ripping cotton off it. edit: Shadowfox, personally I don't think worn belts look tacky. But to each his own. Kata is like a good stir-fry: preparation and timing are everything.
Jiffy
Why would a person want to wear down their belts? Because it looks like they have had their black belt for a long time.
