Go Kan Ryu...is it possibly a variation of Goju Ryu?

My understanding is that Bob Sullivan had trained a little in Shotokan and a little in Goju-Ryu and decded to create his own style.

Hence the name Go(Goju) Kan(Shotokan) Ryu(Goju)

It kinda sounded like it was something like that.

That could be said about any style of Karate.

Indeed...

Its half Goju-Kai and half Shotokan (actually a sub-style of Shoto I believe, although the name has just flown out my mind).

I am wondering why there are about 3 topics on GKR all fairly similar....?

If you look at the badge of GKR they have put a hyphen between each word (Go-Kan-Ryu). Sounds pointless don't you think? But when you investigate a little into the translation it's been put there to split the words.

GO-KAN-RYU = Hard Complete School

However, take out the first hyphen and you get:

GOKAN RYU = RAPE SCHOOL

Interesting eh? I wonder if Big Bob knew that when he created his McDojo.

LOL RG. That's awesome. I have heard very little about that style. I think I will just stick with Shotokan! :P

Hi jaymac,

I just read an article by Mike Clarke which subtly referred to GKR in his article on "The Sensei Cult" in Shotokan Karate Magazine. He didn't say directly he meant them but for anyone who's had any experience of gkr it's pretty obvious.

Who do you train with in Shotokan? I train with Steve Roberts here in Essex. Hopefully I'll be going to the seminar with Shihan Funakoshi in Crawley in March if I have enough money to get a ticket. I went last year and it was great!

If you're local(ish) I highly recommend attending.
