patusai Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Go Kan Ryu...is it possibly a variation of Goju Ryu? "Don't tell me the sky's the limit because I have seen footprints on the moon!" -- Paul Brandt
Co_Co Posted January 10, 2006 Author Posted January 10, 2006 well i now its 2 parts. one is the really really old style and the other part is quite new. u can see it from our katas the first 2 you learn are all nice slow and suttle. then the third is all old style breacking necks and rippping balles off lol The Reason I Train, Is So I Dont Have To Fight.
Jiffy Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 My understanding is that Bob Sullivan had trained a little in Shotokan and a little in Goju-Ryu and decded to create his own style.Hence the name Go(Goju) Kan(Shotokan) Ryu(Goju) The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it's open.
patusai Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 It kinda sounded like it was something like that. "Don't tell me the sky's the limit because I have seen footprints on the moon!" -- Paul Brandt

GrrrArg Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 Indeed...Its half Goju-Kai and half Shotokan (actually a sub-style of Shoto I believe, although the name has just flown out my mind).I am wondering why there are about 3 topics on GKR all fairly similar....?
RichardHangHong Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 If you look at the badge of GKR they have put a hyphen between each word (Go-Kan-Ryu). Sounds pointless don't you think? But when you investigate a little into the translation it's been put there to split the words.GO-KAN-RYU = Hard Complete SchoolHowever, take out the first hyphen and you get:GOKAN RYU = RAPE SCHOOLInteresting eh? I wonder if Big Bob knew that when he created his McDojo. Richard Hang HongChief InstructorSeitou Ryu KarateFind me on Facebook!Seitou Ryu Karate
jaymac Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 LOL RG. That's awesome. I have heard very little about that style. I think I will just stick with Shotokan! A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.
RichardHangHong Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Hi jaymac,I just read an article by Mike Clarke which subtly referred to GKR in his article on "The Sensei Cult" in Shotokan Karate Magazine. He didn't say directly he meant them but for anyone who's had any experience of gkr it's pretty obvious.Who do you train with in Shotokan? I train with Steve Roberts here in Essex. Hopefully I'll be going to the seminar with Shihan Funakoshi in Crawley in March if I have enough money to get a ticket. I went last year and it was great! If you're local(ish) I highly recommend attending. Richard Hang HongChief InstructorSeitou Ryu KarateFind me on Facebook!Seitou Ryu Karate
