fighterdude0 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Hey,I don't know if this happens to any one else, but if martial arts ever comes up in a conversation, and I mention that I am a black belt I almost always hear the same thing. "I tried Karate for a month, then I dropped out." Not necessarly Karate, but I alway here people saying they tried an art for a month then dropped out. I then realized only a few people can be martial artists. I'm sure a ton wouldn't mind being a black belt or so, but I think only a few people have the drive to go all the way, and stick with Martial Arts.Just a thought,Alex
DragonMike Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Yeah,I hear that alot too. I think it itimidates some people honestly, and so they say that they have tried it. But, I bet the percentages is fairly high for people who at least the martial arts for a little while. 5th Dan Tang Soo Do
Kara Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I personally think that it can be for anybody but if you don't have the desire or motivation then it's not for you. 'Thank you, come again!' KBear"lick your wounds, anxious for the next ones"
ncole_91 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Either that or they make some joke about it, like I could still beat you up or something like that
JWLuiza Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 It's not just karate--- look at any hobby/activitiy."I learned to play chess, but I never joined a club""I played t-ball, but I wasn't varsity""I always wanted to write a screenplay but..."We have to prioritize our life. In High School I prioritized martial arts over girls, and it got me here... I would agree that drive and motivation are variale among people, but to say most don't have the mettle to get a black belt should actually be "Many people don't want to get a black belt".
MartialArthur Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Either that or they make some joke about it, like I could still beat you up or something like thatSome people ask me: "So you can beat up anyone?"I usually respond: "Not if they train harder and more often than I do."
Aodhan Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 The response I get most often (And hate the most) is "Wow, I guess we better not tick you off then!"Aodhan There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.-Douglas Everett, American hockey player
ddavis Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I do not go out of my way to tell people that I train, for just that very reason. When people find out I have been training Karate since 1977, they will say some very stupid things, based on their limit MA experience.I was told by Hanshi Ken Rossen, a Black belt is a White belt that never quit. Myself, I think a Black belt is more than that, but that for another thread.David David DavisJust because you like my stuff doesn't mean I owe you anything.Bob Dylan
