Aggression

Recommended Posts

Being aggressive is probably the biggest problem (on both ends of the scale) I notice when I throw 'sparring parties'. I basically invite all of my fellow MA buddies or aquaintances to spar in my basement as a way of applying our practice in a street fight scenario. Well, last night a buddy of mine full on KNEED another kid in the face, busted his lip wide open.. as in in HALF. Have you had any insane aggression moments in sparring?

I don't invite people to fight, but I do invite my MA friends over for a good training session (usually jujitsu not TKD). But we don't rough each other up like that. There is pain involved, but not because we busted each other up.

But I have had a "moment" in sparring (TKD) when this kid made me mad because he has no self control while sparring. He would beat on kids and girls (under 15). That's not right. So when I sparred him, he got rough once again. I let loose with a spinning hook kick (full force) to the head, and about knocked him out. I don't have a problem doing it again.

Yes I have had those moments of extreme aggression when i was younger like in my late teens till I was about 22 I was extremely agrressive in kumite and sometimes ended up going through sparring partners like crazy and I had a lack of control that injured my sparring partners... I'am much much more mellow now at 28 almost 29 but its something you have to learn 'control' I did'nt understand then what my instructor meant by 'a person with deadly skill and.... control has options and one day I will have both' well.... now I know what he meant by that..

To be honest, my aggresiveness depends heavily on my mood, or rather my ability to control it depends on my mood. I find that if I nice and worked up, I'm quite aggressive, though I usually do a good job refraining from doing damage.

This reminds me of a time a few years ago, actually, I have a couple of tales to tell

Within my first couple weeks of starting Tang Soo Do, this guy that came from some other area dropped by the do-jang to try it out (in his gi). As it happens, we were sparring that evening, and I was matched with him. The first thing he did? Some massive jumping-kicking manuever that bruised my chest and winded me. After politely reminding him that sparring that day was to be fairly light, we resumed combat. What does he do? A solid right cross onto my cheek. No blood, but a definite head-snap back for me. Luckily, my instructor saw both and switched sparring partners around so that my instructor was fighting against the new guy. New guy was horribly out-finessed. hehehe.

Other story: After some boxing and MUCH advancement at TSD, we had another sparring class, and I was matched up with my instructors younger brother (he was 25-ish). He demonstrated no control (he busted my nose pretty solidly--I had a constant flow of blood), and seeing that he was a first dan, there was no real excuse for that (esp. since I was a lowly orange belt). So I resorted to boxing more and kicking less (my personal weakspot) and ended up besting him, in my humble opinion. He left with a blackened eye, darkened cheek, and swollen lip. But as my four-year-old sibling stated, he started it. Thankyou for listening to my 2:00 am ramblings

Inspector: Well, you have two options, either you come in peace, and prepare to be dissected. Or, if you come to take over our planet, we surrender.

Zoidberg: A win win scenario! Who cares! I'm meeting new people!

Most of my agressivness in my younger days was due to saving face....sad to say. I was on the losing end or not performing as well as I thought I should against the opponent and agressivley worked to correct the situation. Some say it is the adrenal glands pumping and in some "athletes" it is true and they cannot exhibit the necessary control. In my case, it was pride. I never sparred with non MA friends though.

Everyone gets aggressive when sparring. I don't know one person that dosen't, and people always get more agressive than normal when they get frusrated or angery. They key is learing to control that anger and keeping a level head so that you don't end up doing something you'll regret. If someone is being unnessesarily agressive with you, keep a clear mind and (aslong as you train adiquitly) you should be able to come out on top. People that are over agressive often (not always) make alot of dumb mistakes.

It all depends on my mood, if i had a crappy day i usually fight a little more aggresive and if it was a good day i fight laid back, it all depends. Also i think my parents would kill me if i had a fight club out of my basement, lol.

Hello,

At a party a went to a while back my friends and I were having some full contact kickboxing matches (if that is what you could call them) and two of my friends got into it pretty good. After one of them started clinching too much and grabbing clothing, the other threw repeated knee strikes to his groin and they ended up both wrestling around on the ground and punching each other. In this case, the aggressiveness just kept growing exponentially and it made for some good entertainment for the rest of the people at the party.
