BTW: the reason i'm asking is i want to get into some self defence classes but first i wanna lose some pounds and gain some endurance, stamina lol Thanks!!

So in other words, you have no intention of actually going into a self defense class? Because that's what that sentence really means.

If you want to take the self defense class, go there right now and sign up, even if you are roughly spherical and can barely walk. If you want to take up bicycling, get a bike from anywhere and hit the road in the morning or earlier. Either activity will help you to achieve the ends you want.

Saying you want to get in shape first is like saying you want to learn how to speak a foreign language, but before you take the class you want to go to the other country so that you'll look cool in class. Kind've backwards.

The word 'but' negates everything before it. "I want to learn to fight but first I.." really means "I do not want to learn to fight". So far, the rule that if someone says they want to do some preparatory training before beginning training, that they will never actually do the thing they claim to want to do, holds 100% true. If there was a way to ensure payment, I would bet hard money on you never starting martial arts lessons if you insist on 'getting into shape first", and I would consider it free money with no risk.

So forget this nonsense about getting into shape first and just sign up.

Well ive heard biking is great, however apparently it shortens your leg muscles and take away flexability but if you stretch before and after there should be no problem...

And also you dont need to attack the guy just because he hasnt decicated his life to MA it takes time yea he should have inititive but really though...also if he just wants to get in shape it might do the same for him as a MA to someone else....

I don't think he's attacking him, he is merely pointing out that most people that say things like "I want to do this but first..." never end up doing it. They always set other priorities to be accomplished, rather than just starting the activity they say they want.

I'd agree, if you want to learn MA and self defense, just walk in and start. You'll start developing endurance and stamina in a sport specific context. Once you've started, you can worry about adding other exercises.

As far as the biking, yes, it is low impact, and great for aerobic endurance and losing weight. However, unless you supplement it with upper body training as well, you will disproportionately work your lower body. Also, make sure you stretch well, as it will eventually shorten the hamstrings. I usually recommend swimming over biking, as it is an entire body type exercise, and also very low impact.

biking great that was brandon lee's speciality he did not have the love for runing like bruce so he decided the bike was more for him it is very good for CV but it doesnt develop your arms which is its disadvantage
