Jack
Hello. I thought I'd make this post because I was interested in what others will 'do' in their meditative state. There is a large variety in what can be done... visualisation, mantras, chants, etc. etc. Personally, I tend to do mantras and chants more than a lot of other things, I was just wondering what others do. shotochem
Hi Jack, I dont know what others do but I generally just try to relax as much as possible and think about nothing let your mind go blank. There is no one there, no job, no kids, no wife just lots of deep breathing and drown out everything else I dont know if you consider this meditating, but it certainly relaxes me and reduces stress. I only do this for a few minutes Im not into long term nothingness Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.
Jack
I think that classifies as meditating I discovered this new article on the web about meditation, saying that very few people do it properly. It has a scientific explanation for it and explains everything pretty well. I'm trying out what its recomending - concentrating on an object in my mind's eye and keeping it there as long as possible. When it can be kept there for as long as you want without the wind wondering, you can pretty much start doing whatever sort of meditation you want. http://www.spiritweb.org/Spirit/mystery-meditation.html Very interesting read. Karateka
When I medidate, I basically think of just clearing my mind of all distractions. I have found within my training that I tend to get distracted not with my mind, just my eyes. I try to build on my focus more. Then I try to make that focus tighter and tighter. YODA
I don't meditate - never seen the point of sitting qietly comtemplating my navel. It always seemed a little selfish - sat there thinking "Me me me me". I do sometimes enter what you may call a meditative state though. When practicing long forms (some of ours last 8-10 minutes) or when climbing in the hills. I've had few strange events too - what I can only describe as "Wow moments" - an awe inspiring awareness of being at one & part of something bigger, well - more of an awareness that everything is one thing. Hard to explain. This has happened after very hard solo training out in the wilds - on more than one occasion. Strange, very strange. Hard to explain. This has happened after very hard solo training out in the wilds - on more than one occasion. Strange, very strange. I can honestly say here, that I do understand what you mean. I had a similar moment on New Year's Day. Me, my friend, and his family drove down to the beach and it was almost deserted. I went off for a walk alone and I think I had one of those 'wow' moments just walking next to the waves on soft sand, no-one around. Damnit, I really yearn to be back there. Meditation is not selfish however, and you don't have to concentrate on the navel - that is only for chi meditation. The idea of meditation is being able to slow down the constant flood of messages entering and leaving your mind until you can concentrate on one thing for as long as you wish, and eventually concentrate on nothing. Surely meditation makes an inpact on your personality, which can make you more helpful and kind an individual. Heck, I've just been doing this meditation for two weeks and yesterday I instantly offered to hoover the house for my mum? And I felt happy in doing it? I don't know, but I think its already making subtle differences. JackCurrently 'off' from formal MA trainingKarateForums.com
SaiFightsMS
Meditation selfish. Hmm never thought of it that way. Many have a need deep inside themself to be aware of their spiritual nature. There are so many ways this need is expressed. And so many ways to explore it. I have a need to have a part of me to keep my mental state and my physical being in tune with each other and in balance. Currently I am a bit out of balance.
