i think it was great for martial arts as in really showed the philosophy behind it, not just the idea that you can beat the crap out of anyone, and those that were taught that way, ended up losing in the end.

same with number 2. sato held the grudge, but miyagi forgave him in the end and it showed him he was wrong, and the nephew that still had the grudge got his * kicked.

then number three had the same as number one, with the mcdojo losing again.

there was a number 4 but i have since purged that from my memory :P

It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong, and I am NOT a big man.

i think it help because some people saw the movie and thought that maybe, they could learn to be able to fight or defend themselves like Daniel did,

me for example lived the Daniel Laruso life Hell, we have the same first name. not to mention, the fact that i to got picked oqwn, got in a fight with a guy who was a Prefessional fighter, tried to use Karate i learned in third grade( when i got in the fight i was in the seventh, and had not practice karate since the third grade. ) But he on the other hand was a boxer who always practice for like five years. do i even have to say what happended. :( but that summer, i found a academy and a good Sifu. and him and the assistant instructor have changed my Life for the better. :)

sorry 4 getting a little of topic.

what style of karate was in the karate kid movie what did mr myagi teach? i have always wanted to know

I think it meant to be goju I notice the goju symbol (the one in my avatar) on the gi of the disciples of Chozen (who was taught by his father, who in turn was taught by Mr. Miyagi's father).

Probably...Goju style.....you know the third movie they did the seiunchin kata. So it probably the strongest suggestion would be from goju or shi-to style.

I definitely think it helped. Anything that promotes the positive aspects of martial arts is a good thing.

Of course, not everybody will take the positive message, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be heard. You can lead a horse to water...

As for the jokes, I agree with Shotochick. They're just lighthearted jokes. Can't let something like that bother you, especially when most people don't mean any offense, but are just trying to be funny.

I thought it was the myagi family kata :P

seriously tho, was talking about it with my sempai the other day, its definitely a goju, and the story miyagi tells about its creation isnt too far from the truth. sempai has a martial arts encyclopedia and in it it talks about one of the early goju players who is named myagi.

The movie was a great boost. The "crane kick" a simple jump front snap kick has become the "stair way to heaven" of karate. People in the music world think you play good when you can play that song (so simple...... yet annoying. When People find out I'm a MA teacher and that i teach kids, they ask if I teach that kick (annoying)

The second movie tho is historically correct from what I can tell. I know that the myagi name is associated with the origins of karate in okinawa (sp)

As for any bad effect I really see none. Kids will drop out of class when they find out you cant be a black belt in 3 mos. whether or not they have seen that movie.

I love the tournament scene. As if they have a graphic artist at the tournament making the signs showing who beat who and who will advance to the next round. Oh, and the bare knuckle stuff, Danny was hard core!!
