Singularity Posted March 18, 2002 Posted March 18, 2002 I fully agree with Yoda, you can as long as you are very careful. Read Yoda's training regimen he laid out for you, it is not very intense at all, it is just something to get you into the groove of exercising, and is very healthy. Remember that at your age cardio can be excellent, and that of course stretching is very important. But most of all, I think Yoda had it right when he said have fun. Help out your mom, just don't hurt yourself. Good luck in whatever you choose. Dave
Angus Posted March 18, 2002 Posted March 18, 2002 Well, i'm gonna have to disagree with u on this one Yoda. When the bones are still in a major stage of development then it is a bad time to start doing weights... Cardio is way more valuable to a kid of the age of 12. Angus Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.
YODA Posted March 18, 2002 Posted March 18, 2002 That's ok Angus - If we all agreed there be no such thing as discussion Weight training as I prescribed above is fine. I'm not talking about bodybuilding or powerlifting here. So, tell me, what damage will my theoretical 40lbs chest press do that a push up won't? Same target muscle groups, similar level of resistance. How about a 40lb leg extention compared to a bodyweight squat? Or a sub bodyweight lat pulldwon compared to a pull up? SaiFightsMS Posted March 18, 2002 Posted March 18, 2002 At the "Y" where I work out 12 is the minimum age for the fitness floor. And an orientation is required. As well for those 12-16 they are required to be escorted by a parent of adult workout partner when in the fitness area. So working out is a good way to bond with a parent.
Bretty101 Posted March 19, 2002 Posted March 19, 2002 I think it's a question of intensity. Avoid intense weight training, keep it light. Don't look to build muscle but develope all round fitness. When your a growing lad (i'm still growing) your bodies full of testosterone and such stuff (thats about a technical as i get) and it's there to develope your whole body as it grows. I don't think it's a good idea to concentrate that growth onto certain parts of your body as you would by weight training. and better to do all l round fitness work so your body developes as intended. Don't get me wrong i think weight training is great and i've been lifting weights since i was 14. Just keep the intensity down and avoid the obsessive pumping iron mindset till your older.
