Goju_boi
well you could do all the upper and lower body exercises with dumbells, but you wouldn't really build much muscle or strength. https://www.samuraimartialsports.com for your source of Karate,Kobudo,Aikido,And Kung-Fu
glockmeister
Why couldnt you?Dumbells can go pretty heavy. My old gym had 120 lb DB's and I would say you better be pretty strong to do DB bench presses with those. I have adjustable DB's that allow you to add weight to them.Anyway, yes you can use them for lower body. Dumbell squats and Dumbell lunges work you lower body well. Goju_boi
well let's just guess he has 50lb dumbbells, after a while he will outgrow that weight and need something heavier. https://www.samuraimartialsports.com for your source of Karate,Kobudo,Aikido,And Kung-Fu

Goju_boi
well lets say he had those 50lb dumbells. He would use those for a full body workout, and lets say it was heavy enough to stimulate his upper body to grow muscle, but for his lower body after a while it will just become an endurance exercise. The same goes for his upperbody, after a while he will grow enough muscle to be only lifting for endurance with that pair. That's why I'm saying he needs more than just a pair of dumbells. https://www.samuraimartialsports.com for your source of Karate,Kobudo,Aikido,And Kung-Fu

Goju_boi
they are great , but barbell workouts are better. https://www.samuraimartialsports.com for your source of Karate,Kobudo,Aikido,And Kung-Fu
glockmeister
Goju,I will definately agree that its better to have access to a barbell, but your origional post was that he wouldn't make much gains in muscle or strength with dumbells period. Fact is you can in fact make good dains with them. and yes you would have to eventually move up in weight with them, same as a barbell so I kinda figured that as a givin that eventually he would need to get heavier ones. But the same goes for barbell, as you get stronger, you have to get more weight plates, no different.I always prefer the dumbells that allow you to add weight to them rather then getting several different fixed weight dumbells.
