Personally ,I woulden't worry too much about this , I trained Jka style shotokan and I think what matters most is how close is the quality of training to jka which spread shotokan in the world by sending her elite karatekas like Nishiyama ,Kase ,Enoeda,Kanazawa ,Shirae and a few more ... , karatekas who originaly learned from these masters are now in their third decade of their karate and the generation after that who learned from them and so on .there are many good shotokan schools and instructers out there but there are also so many poor ones ,like any other style .it is most important to know which is which so you don't end up in the latter ,how many colour belts and in which order is of little importance.

I agree but sometimes its easier to talk about the not so deep side of karate sometimes and just the stupid stuff, for me anyway.

Traditional JKA is 8 Kyus of White, Green, Brown, Black. Some dojos choose to provide their own incentive colors for various Kyus and Pre-Kyu levels of progression. It's the Kyu level that's actually recognized by the JKA and not the belt color. Belt color is a matter of interpretation by each dojo in relation to the actual Kyu ranking. You could have your students wear all white belts untill black if that is your choice to do so...

While in Japan, I noticed that the belt colors were inconsistent from one organization to another. Mostly they were determined by the regional association. Here in the US, I've seen the colors vary from club to club even in the same association. The national leaders were fairly unconcerned with belt colors, seeing them mostly as being encouragement for beginners and not really important.

I agree with KillerMiller and 24fightingchickens. The colors might change depending on what dojo your at. even in the same organization. But I think the kyu ranks are always the same.

Almost every place I've trained it's been white, green, brown black with some places adding purple between green and brown. I've also seen other styles and MAs where there is just white, brown and black or just white and black. I think that the less colors usually means the higher standards but of course this isnt always the case, it might just mean they the instructor doesn't give tests very often!

I just joined a jka dojo a few weeks ago. Why are there only 4 belts(white green brown black)?

the website is jkaboston.com

Why? Why do you need more belts? This is more traditional. That is the belt progression I had back in the early 70's. Now, some styles have a dozen colors and striped belts before black. No, it's not wrong just a bit much IMO. I would be proud of the fact that your school is more traditional in it's belt progression.
