how many people would you ever consider fighting at once if you did have the option of running, and i realize lots of people will say "i would take the run option no matter what to aviod confrontation" but what if this isnt the first time youve been confronted by this person(these people) perhaps this is a constant thing, youve managed to find your way out of this situation before but you just want to end it once and for all, assuming these are the kind of people who learn there lesson(for arguments sake), and assuming there about your size with little to no martial arts training, i know thats a lot of assumptions but humour me, and remember this running option isnt a sure thing they are willing to persue, so how many? personally i would only fight one guy at my present skill level, but i know they're are some very skilled people here.

EDIT: just for extra conversation what if there was someone with you who may be at risk (gf ,friend)

Personally, I don't want to fight even one person, let alone many. But if I had no choice, I would fight as many as I had to fight to survive. Definitely I would use more crippling techniques against more than one opponent to try to disuade the others from coming at me. It's amazing how a dislodged eyeball on one guy will make the others think twice. :D

All of them, however id probably end up running for short distance and then continue...

Well, it really sounds like you are asking advice about a bully with a group of friends at school or something similar. That's something you need to take up with school officials or similar if that is the case. When confronting people, you can be held more liable because of your training if you do inflict damage.

Personally, I would be willing to tackle 2 to 4 untrained people. Trained, one on one, maybe two. Anything else, I give them what they want, unless I am seriously afraid of serious injury even if I give in. In that case, I do my best. In the first scenarios, I try to inflict only enough damage to get myself out of the situation. If I am seriously afraid of harm, then all bets are off. I'll use any technique I have and worry about the repercussions later. If I have a friend or gf, same thing unless they threaten them specifically. It's not an ego thing, my fiancee has seen me in the ring. I do what is necessary at the time depending on the situation. Anything from "Here's my wallet and keys" to kicking as much tail as I possibly can.

If I have the choice I wouldn't fight more than 3 people , but if I have no choice at all , I advise against running , sometimes in life you just have to stand and fight , we learn martial arts to defend ourselves not to run on each and every confrontation

no i was just wondering where people would set there limits, i think its a pretty important thing for people to know about themselves, but i do appreciate the advice, thankyou

I think it's folly to say "well there's only two of them, I can take 'em!" If you have the chance to escape (which I think you are implying that one does) you should take it, regardless.

If it was a real self defense situation where there is no way out and you have have to fight you mostly likely will not get to set a limit on how many people attack you. So my answer would be as many as I could.

i hate it too but the whole karate i pratice is about eyeballs, it's just the matter of how deep you gonna go, in a real situation you can't start punching and kicking with bunch of people, you just take the first eye out ,use him as shield ,throw him to the next take another eye out ,this is karate , in real life you can't put a joint lock or a nice throw on somebody your size easily.
