Whats happening to me?

Recommended Posts

I live in Illinois. I'm not new to internet boards, but usually I only look for gaming ones. I'm an avid gamer, its how I fulfill my adventurous nature I suppose. And if I expect anyone to know how to identify whats happening, I better give a little background. My town has about 9000 people in it, and then we get a little more from the capital just north at our school. I'm a nobody there for the most part. I prefer being alone, but people can't stand to see that. Everyone is my friend, aside from the druggies, and no one understands me. Everyone thinks I'm straight edge, but I'm not. The only drug that I use is caffeine. And I cuss from time to time, when I'm in love I'll have sex, and I don't no anything else about being straight edge, but I know I'm not it. You could call me superstitous if you want. I believe in "ki" or "chi" or "qui" (or even the force if you want....) to some extent. In middle school, I was a runner, better at short distance. But as a sophomore in high school, I don't do any sports. I'm in shape, and have the pictures to prove it, but I'm nothing special. I'm smart, I'll be in all honors classes once school starts, and for gym I'm in the toughest one (short distance and long distance running two days a week, and bench, squat, dead lift and clean 3 days). I speak spanish pretty well, and a bit of a few other languages. Me and my parents have a rough history and I don't want to go into that. I enjoy anime as well as movies. (I hate watching sports). And I'm a scout.

This is where I'm confused. I went to canada for a week to go canoing. We had 13 people so one group had to have 3 people in their canoe. My best friend and I are experts at canoing in my troop so naturally we got the extra scout who can pull his own weight. We go canoeing once a year, but usually on rivers and not lakes. The first day of canoeing, we were in last. I was struggling with being in the front. Our canoe agreed we were all a little rusty and used that as an excuse. The second day no better. We had to portage, and I couldn't carry the canoe. I was probably one of the strongest kids there! It weighed maybe 80 lbs, and I can squat 200, I could bench 130. I can deadlift 300. So why couldn't I carry it?! That bugged me all the next day, which we took off from canoeing to rest. I meditated about it at night, and worried about it all day. We were on a little island with rocks perfect for skipping. IT helped me vent my frustration. At night during my meditation, I thought of a character from a game I like. FFVIII, Squall. A disciplined soldier-ish guy. The next day we canoed for a few hours doing more portages and I found them tough but putting my mind to it, I could do it. No one in my canoe talked, we all were in "the zone". We went 10 miles, were in the lead the whole time by at least 400 meters. The adults, who are mainly army men, couldn't keep up. The football player and his army dad couldn't keep up. These guys are beasts...and we pwned them.

Since I've gotten back from canada, I've been as disciplined as possible. Doing 3-5 sets of 50 push ups, sometimes almost fainting, running a few miles once a week. The other day I did 75 push ups. It was like suddenly 50 was too easy. And then I decided to try benching for the first time all summer. I tried 135....5 lbs. over my most recent max. I did it 3 or 4 times. I tried 140. I did it once...then again. It was easy. I just did 145 and it was easy. I'm 15 lbs over my max, and I've been on my "regiment" for maybe a week, and broken it once or twice. I eat totally unhealthily. One day I was suddenly angry...my parents were gone as usual, and I felt like exploding. So I threw a left hook (my weak hand) at the door not even trying super hard. And now theres a dent in it about a half of an inch deep.

Is this just testosterone induced? Or what...

That's nothing unusual. At the beginning of the trip you were using muscles you weren't used to using. Conoeing and portaging are physically difficult tasks if you're not used to them. I went on a trip like that once, we had two portages on one day that were over a mile each. I wasn't very big at the time, but I was used to doing a lot of physical labor like farm work. So, when it came time to portage, I was outhauling ex-military men. Your body simply adjusted to the stresses being put on it. As for you being able to bench press more, that comes with time. You're almost always going to improve until your body reaches its edge. You said you're a sophomore right? Those bench and squat numbers are good, but not extremely impressive. You should see a rise in those numbers over the next month or so. What you have gone through though is a sudden explosion in progress. You probably plateaud for a long time, and now you're going to see the benefits of the hard work. It's what happens when you workout for a long time. A similar thing happened to me between freshman and sophomore year. My freshman year I was benching 215 and squating 315 for a long time, then over the summer I pushed over the plateau and his 270 on the bench and 390 on the squat. So, massive explosions in strength happen after long period of staying the same.

Thanks for the explanation....I just did 150 by the way. Now is it normal for me to suddenly be sleepy more often? I thought it was from waking up super early to help clean up the park for scouts. But I have always been a light sleeper...I got a B on the Biology final exam while most people got C's or D's, and the night before I had only had one and half hours of sleep. I'm weird like that. Over the summer I've been staying up to like 4 in the morning then sleeping til 9. Last night I went to bed at a reasonable time knowing I'd wake up at 5:30. I was half asleep cleaning up, and I went home and watched National Treasure and was still half asleep. Nothing woke me up fully. I even slept another 3 hours just now. Still tired. Is this a side effect of this sudden explosion?

Mostly likely. If your body pushed through a limit you are probably using energy for growing and healing instead of staying conscious. It's the same reasons that babies sleep so much; ridiculuosly drastic changes in the body.

you have to discipline your mind. You start thinking of defeat and you cant do a thing. As soon as u thought about something inspiring to you, you were suddenly able to move better.

and you got mad and felt stronger-thats adrenaline.

Just wondering but what is sophomore?

It's a school grade in the American schooling system.

Generally, we have elementary school from kindergarten through 6th grade. (Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, etc.)

After that, it depends on the area. Some places pick up middle school as being 6th through 8th grade. Other places have junior high which is 7th through 9th.

Once you get to high school, (10th through 12th, someplaces are 9th through 12th), they have different names.

9th is generally termed a freshman. 10th is a sophomor, 11th is a junior, 12th is a senior. Once you get to college/university, it's the same thing. first year (technically 13th grade, I suppose) is a freshman, 2nd year sophomore, etc.

That isn't good. See my summation at the bottom

totally unhealthily. One day I was suddenly angry...my parents were gone as usual, and I felt like exploding. So I threw a left hook (my weak hand)

Some of this is due to you growing, and the hormones that are raging. We've all been there.

However, the fact that you drive yourself to almost fainting after a few sets of pushup, and the anger episodes worry me, especially with the parental history that you mentioned. I would try to eat healthier (You mention you eat unhealthy, and that implies you do know what healthy is), and get on a regular sleep pattern.

Personally, I would also talk to some at the school, or a counselor of some kind. I had to do that when I was your age, and being able to talk about things that frustrate or upset you is a great relief. You don't have to worry about your friends making fun of you if you talk to them, and you can get a lot of understanding about yourself.

Just an opinion from one that's been there :D
