Is this a good deal or what?

JKD is cool but since you work at a prison Krav Maga is probably more practical.

As far as Shorin Ryu goes I dont know anything, but you cant argue with the price

I've been taking Shorin Ryu since March and I love it. Of course, there are different schools of Shorin Ryu, different training methods, etc. But definitely check out a class. It sounds like you have nothing to lose.

okinawan has its benefits, but i wouldnt say its better than shotokan necessarily.

take that class, cross trainning is awesome, and makes you see your primary art from another angle, which is always a good thing.

OK,

I sat in on a class tonight at that school.

There were 10 or 11 students there, none of which appeared to be over the age of 15. The man who was the senior instructor that night told me that 2/3 of the people who took Shorin Ryu there were kids. Although there were more adult who studies the TKD that they also offer at the school.

He also claimed there wasn't much in the way of grappling there. and that they only did full contact sparring about 2 times a month.

I was watching some of these kids doing some kicks and punches on focus pads, some of whom were wearing brown belts, I wasn't impressed with their kicks or their punches. They close the class with some "light contact" sparring all hits had to be to the torso. I wasn't sure if they were sparring or dancing.

At the end of the class, I asked the head instructor who was filling in for the other master what style of Shoring Ryu it was that they taught, and he claimed he didn't know there was any more than one.

A student with a green belt who looked about 11 said "oh yes, there are 4 different styles." the Instructor said: "really? I didn't know that."

Overall, I wasn't impressed. I am thinking of sitting in on another class with another instructor who should be there on Thursday. I just hope it is better than this one. Because I really was not impressed.

They do, however teach Sai, Bo, Kamas, and Tonfu which is kinda cool.
