I mentioned before that there was a school that teaches Shorin Ryu like right behind my house. I was out jogging today and stopped by and talked with the instructor. He is also a city cop and says that all law enforcement personell only have to pat 22 dollars a month! I think thats a pretty good deal, and am seriously considering the school to see what it has to offer. He says they do full-contact sparring and I have noticed that they do weapons training as well.

My only concern would be if it would somehow interfere with my Krav Maga training since I am sure some of the techniques are different.

I think for 22 bucks a month it should be worth checking out. as far as TMA go, there isnt much else in my area but TSD and TKD. There is no Shotokan karate schools in the area which I would really like to take but maybe Shorin Ryu is a little betterthan TKD for self defense.

Sounds like a good deal to me, and believable. My Shorin Ryu place only charges 20 dollars a month regardless of who you are, so it isn't one of those "too good to be true" kind of things.

I would check out Shorin Ryu as it usually focuses more on self-defense and close in-fighting to the takedown.

Use the JKD approach:

Take what serves your interests from Shorin Ryu. Discard what doesn't.

Train with the same mentality you have when you train Krav (which, I assume, you study for self-defense {Some study it solely for fitness these days }). You'll probaly find lots of stuff that won't help at all. But you'll prbly find some things that will.

Don't forget the additional benefits of conditioning, coordination, etc.

Yes I was planning on taking the JKD approach. (In fact was wanting to take JKD but the cost of it on top of the others would be too much to afford.)

I know what you are saying about some people just taking Krav for a work-out, but I am fortunate my instructor for Krav and Haganah takes the training very seriously and most of the student are police/corrections and the like. Same with my TSD instructor Master John Beam, he worked in corrections as did all the students who came to his morning classes.

The instructor for Shorin Ryu is a city police officer.

I have found that in the search for a school, best to look for those frequented by guys who actually face danger every day like myself and who will take SD trainign seriously. Not saying non-LEO don't.

I Have and i like it. The man who teaches it teaches at the same place I take Krav and Haganah. Problem is it is 60 dollars a month, and I already pay that for Krav. I thought I would drop TSD for JKD but then I am paying 120 a month. When you're a single dad, thats not cheap.

I got to take TSD for free becasue the instructor and I both workled in the same prison and he kinda let us C/O's from there train there as a favor to us.

I am still kinda undecided though.

i guess you are not familiar with karate the lineage goes like this shorin ryu ----> Shotokan -----> TKD

it seems you are very practical ,i think okinawan karate which is combat oriented with it's body conditioning serves you better than shotokan karate, just my 2 cents!.
