The sceintist were saying the muscles and range of motion improved in the patients that trained & ran bare foot. It indicated the foot could grip better and move more effectively. It also indicated that running shoes are the cause of most running injuries. Shoe companies have tried to fix this problem but have had to study the problem to determine how the make the shoe more effective so all the muscles are working. If any one has any more information on this topic please post it. I am very interested in improving range of motion and knetics in the foot and the topic is interesting to me. However, most of these studies are conducted on a natural surface, such as a field, trail, what have you. Part of the problem in most urban areas, is that there are not very many natural places to run that are safe for the feet. Pavement, asphalt, broken glass, other man left trash, etc. make even nice running trails unsuitable for bare feet.I ran cross country for a long time (almost 8 years), and I never had shin splints, or other common running maladies. I also went to a good running store and had them look at my stride, foot plant and gait, and recommend a type of shoe. I am an extreme pronator with very little arch in my foot. They are built to mimic the movement of barefoot running. They prevent the shoe from "babying" the feet and not allowing it to receive the full force of the exercise while still protecting it like a shoe should.Go to nike.com and look at the Nike Free running shoe. And it's a harder workout because the ground shifts away as you push off. Meguro Posted July 10, 2005 Share Posted July 10, 2005 If you're going to run barefoot or use shoes designed to mimc barefoot running, make sure you're not stomping on your heel and rolling forward. You've got to be a balls-o-the-feet type of runner. I'm a heel stomper, myself. Old habits die hard. Still, I ran the NY Marathon, and stomped all the way to the finish. My running shoes are well padded in the heel. If you run on the BOYF, you shouldn't need extra cushioning, and with a nice layer of callouses should be able to run on tarmac barefoot. But not much at all. If you really wanted a shoe that was simply a protective piece around your foot, and nothing else... Puma H-Streets.
