SyracuseJundokan Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 Hello!! Who out there is Goju-ryu? Talking about strict goju-ryu, not "modified, adapted, evolved, blended with others, etc."What organizations and affliations? In my area there are a LARGE number of schools claiming goju that have nothing in common with authentic goju... Is this common where you are also? https://www.SyracuseJundokan.comAuthentic & Traditional Goju-ryuWKF Competition TrainingJundokan Honbu: https://www.jundokan.jp(While you're reading this, your next opponent is sweating in the dojo!)
UsagiYojimbo Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 One of the schools I checked out here claimed to be goju. But the sensei was teaching mostly kids and I wasn't terribly impressed with technique. Also, the school had no organizational affiliation. As far as I know, that's the only goju place in town.
Eiichi Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 I belong to the IOGKF, headed by Morio Higaonna. The only other Goju Ryu dojo I know of in my area is a Goju Kai dojo headed by Gosei Yamaguchi (son of Gogen Yamaguchi). SyracuseJundokan Posted June 23, 2005 Author Posted June 23, 2005 Nice to hear - sounds like your area is in better shape than mine!! https://www.SyracuseJundokan.comAuthentic & Traditional Goju-ryuWKF Competition TrainingJundokan Honbu: https://www.jundokan.jp(While you're reading this, your next opponent is sweating in the dojo!)
Eiichi Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 I suppose, but Goju Kai isn't authentic Goju Ryu IMHO. I would say IOGKF and schools that shot off from Miyazato Sensei and other senior instructors under Chojun Miyagi are authentic. Gogen Yamaguchi modified too much when he started Goju Kai. SyracuseJundokan Posted June 23, 2005 Author Posted June 23, 2005 Hehe - that's what I like to hear... https://www.SyracuseJundokan.comAuthentic & Traditional Goju-ryuWKF Competition TrainingJundokan Honbu: https://www.jundokan.jp(While you're reading this, your next opponent is sweating in the dojo!)
Bleeding Lion Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 Shorei Shobukan Goju Ryu, headed by Shihan Rosberry. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence thus, is not an act, but a habit. --- Aristotle
italian_guy Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 Goju ryu here, not 100% sure about the lineage.I think is Shorei-kan... but I have to ask.
carl Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 I train with a student of Glen Grabow, Shobu-kan, although Glen's not affiliated with them since Masa Shinjo's death. I see Glen several times a year as we live in the same town. He trained in Okinawa under Seikichi Toguchi at the Shorei-kan and then went with Shinjo when he opened the Shobu-kan. So I guess you could call it authentic Goju-ryu without the affiliation although we still wear the Shobu-kan patch.Carl
SANCHIN31 Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 Does it all really matter? So what if a goju guy doesn't belong to a certain organization and has incorporated other things into their curriculum? Maybe he just doesn't want to pay their dues.I know my lineage, but I also know my adaptations. A blackbelt is not the beginning,it's a piece of cloth, that's all.
