I like my free standing stance - only because i can flow into any other stance quickly and easily from there...

Bruce Lee studied this extensively and in his book he gives some valuable insights to his research.

Stances in Kata are designed to develop leg strength. When you are sparring one normally takes a higher stance.

When I spar I take a stance similar to the rooted stance of Shotokan (Fudo-Dachi) but slightly higher. This is very similar to the South Paw stance in boxing. I am just as comfortable in the Othodox position.

Whee, I like the only stance I know.

Feet about a feet apart, left foot out, on the balls of my feet. My left jaw tucked into my left shoulder, right hand next to my right jaw and my left hand hanging around at about chest height.

It takes sacrifice to be the best.

There are always two choices, two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy.

Stances are used to generate power and prevent a skilled opponent from turning you into a bird...

Believe it or not the old masters probably were aware that one could jump around in combat it's just that they chose to root themselves to the ground instead for control and power. Those that I have trained with have found the classical 'stances' to be quite mobile and useful when properly applied. Instead of left or right facing we prefer forward facing from outside range..this allows us to move into any position and does not offer the opponent a lead leg to attack or grab, it also allows us to counter any leg attack with one of our own and imploy sticking legs if and when needed.

Again all 'stances' are transitory and the important thing (for us) is to maintain a lowered center of gravity, this is critical for proper issuing of energy needed for attacks, defense and traps, not to mention helping to keep us on our feet.

My favorite stance in sanchin dachi (half moon stance) in karate. It is very strong. All of your muscles must be tense. The instructor in traditional school test this stance by hitting you with a stick. :karate:

Well I like the stance were you left foot is infront abit then right a bit back and shoulder lenght apart

Because I feel most comfortable in that poistion and easy to throw a quick punch and pretty quick kick.
