How does one determine what "great" means in martial arts?

Only winning tournaments?

I think that everyone is talking about sport karate fighters in this topic, so I guess those guys that won most of their fights are considered "great" in sport karate. But as far as "great" in MA is consered I think that those martial artists that devoted their lives to practising, studying and teaching MA for decades are "great".

One name to watch out for in sport kumite is UK guy Sonny Roberts. Leon Walters is currently one of the best from the sport karate England squad.

cung le is newr guy who is involved in pride fighting.

he trains very intensly and if you can find any videos on him, i think you'll be impressed.

oh..and also Chuck Liddel...not sure how to spell his last name.

he's a Kenpo guy with blazing hand speed and sis a powerful striker. he's the newest UFC winner.

In the context of sport karate theres a few interviews with sorty types here:

https://www.shikon.com (seems to be down at the moment)

Ticky Donovan and Dave Hazard amongst other have interviews there.

In the non sporting context..the guys who runs ShiKon. But then, im biased :P
