Can someone help me decide a martial art form to take. I've studied some Karate as a teen(blue belt) and was always a fairly good street fighter...haven't needed to defend myself in years though. I'm 46yrs old, 5'8" w/large, strong upper body and legs are quite stretched (can kick 6'10" very easily). My problem is my left arm was badly injured a few years ago and now I find that I can't defend myself as I would like to...got my head handed to me in a friendly sparring match...very embarassing. I want to get back to the confidence I've always had.

How's that injured arm for blocking? You can try some MT or kickboxing to develop some striking against the legs, which should at least keep people at a distance or setup for a good frontal kick that'll stop people who like to charge or flurry. Combined with good flexibility, it'll keep people guessing if you decide to kick.

The sensei of the karateclub kusanku were in new york some years ago, there were a person without arms training karate, so I bet that one injured arm doesnt stop you from training karate. It is all about the mind, body will do as it`s told to.

I wish I had that flexibility.....

You can choose a mostly kicking MA like TKD, capoeira or Northern shaolin kung fu.

BTW how bad is your arm?

Taekwondo, because you dont really need hands

so much in Taekwondo or kickboxing because you allready have been to karate

What hurts you but doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.

Capoeira is straight out. I spend a lot of time posting a lot of my body weight on my hands for various reasons.

Karate would be fine, i'm sure. You'll want an art that uses an asymmetrical stance, and you'll want to work with your teacher to focus on the things you can do without straining your injured hand. Probably this means you'll be focusing on specializing in fighting from specific stances, say uninjured hand forward side stances and becoming a specialist with lead hand strikes and lead foot kicks. Look for a teacher willing to help you work toward this goal.

If your arms arn'nt that so good, let it recoverd go try some kicking art, or just get back to karate.

There will be a day that you can't cope with your life, I want you to look at the star and remember, I always smile back at you. luV u lots Jen
