dtstiachi Posted April 2, 2005 Posted April 2, 2005 Hey guys and girls,How many of you (instructors or students) have experienced problems with people not keeping their finger nails short? Our school has a requirement that fingers and toe nails must be kept short. Is this the same at your school? Thanks for the feedback. "The journey of a 1,000 miles starts with but a single step."
Mr. Mike Posted April 2, 2005 Posted April 2, 2005 we don't have that requirement, but we should.I remember taking a chunk out of my instructor's head with a thumbnail...man, I felt bad for awhile. He jsut said that will teach him to block When a man's fortunate time comes, he meets a good friend; When a man has lost his luck, he meets a beautiful woman.-anonymous
cross Posted April 2, 2005 Posted April 2, 2005 How many of you (instructors or students) have experienced problems with people not keeping their finger nails short?I have been quiet lucky in that all my training partners dont let their nails get too long. Our school has a requirement that fingers and toe nails must be kept short. Is this the same at your school? We dont have a requirment at our school, but out of courtesy everyone keeps their nails trimmed.
solar_kid Posted April 2, 2005 Posted April 2, 2005 Yes, we do. I'm told that fingernails harbor a lot of bacteria, so getting sliced open with a fingernail is not only likely to cut you, but to give you an infection if you don't clean it up right. ----Hmm. Hello. This is the floor. How did I get here?
SanShou Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 I sparred with someone once who didn't have full sparring boots, only pads (which leave the toes open) and her toenail nut my hand and it got infected for a long time and hurt a lot. I truly don't like people who wear just the foot pads and also just the hand pads, without boots or gloves it hurts a lot more, especially lower belts with less control

Our school has a requirement that fingers and toe nails must be kept short. Is this the same at your school? Thanks for the feedback.I haven't ever experienced any problems with this. I am also not aware of an official requirement to keep your nails short; I think it's just one of those unwritten rules that everyone follows out of respect for whomever you might scratch "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." - T. mindsedgeblade Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 Generally, most people keep them short, but when I had just started, another beginner had long nails, and she scratched my wrists raw doing self defense. The best a man can hope foris, over the course of his lifetime,to change for the better.

Our Headmaster is very picky about this issue. "The journey of a 1,000 miles starts with but a single step."
pittbullJudoka Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 At our dojo we have only had one finger nail cut since I've been there but we are adults and have the respect for one another to keep 'em trimmed.
aefibird Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 We don't have an official rule, but people tend to keep their finger and toe nails cut out of respect to their training partners.
