KarateKid7
this should be possible but at the moment all i can think of are lunges...maybe some squats. The lunges seem to hit the joints quite bad tho. Plus i dont want to lose flexibility and I want to increase explosivness and speed in the lower body. Mith
straight leg deadlifts. These work the hamstrings hard and are easy on the joints. It's better to use a barbell but I am sure it can be done effectively with dumbbells.
Meguro
When you do your lunge, step backwards instead of stepping forwards. This will be easier on your knees. You can also do squats with a back pack full of books, bottled water, whatever, when your own bodyweight isn't enough. When these get too easy, try doing one-legged squats.

Jinxx0r
When you do your lunges, make sure that your knee doesn't go out over your toes. That's when you get your knee pain. If you allow your knee to move out over your toes it puts a LOT of stress on your knees... if it's done correctly it should be just like a correct front stance.http://umanitoba.fitdv.com/new/articles/article.html?artid=339Avoid forward leaning in a way that extends the body over the legs, causing the front knee to ride too far past the front toe and placing unnecessary stress on the knee. dtstiachi
Try Split squats while holding a dumbell. Also do lunges and deadlifts. "The journey of a 1,000 miles starts with but a single step."
