Recently my sensei told me that she would like me to branch out and really study another system. While most of her other students prefered Judo, she suggested Aikido to me. Recently I've watched a couple classes and from what I've seen worked in the dojo I went to it was very interesting. Yes, it's a "softer" style, but my god the techniques are awesome. I think that if you learn nothing else from Aikido you will learn better flow and balance things that can enhance any other martial art. As of April first I'm stripping off my black belt and donning a white one agai, the first time in many many years. I am more than willing to do this because I personally believe Aikido is a worth while system, but everybody is different.

Some people are better suited for Judo or something else entirely. It depends on what you are looking for I guess. Ganbatte on your pursuit of Aikido if that is the path you choose.

I always thought aikido was pretty cool, but I've heard that it just takes a large amount of practice in the art to make it effective for street situations... But thats only what I have been told...

Aikido can get pretty rough, I mean if the aikidoka does a technique, he can easily break someone arms or fingers or throw them in a bad situation and when they are on the ground you could jump on them or kick them, but Aikido teaches self control and peace, not many other styles teach this.

I think is quite a good art. Like tai chi chuan it requires some time to be self defence effective but it has other benefits. I think it matches quite well with karate.

I love Aikido with its gracious moves, and I would love to take it one day. However, it is one of the martial arts that takes the longest amount of time to get proficient in. So if you're looking for a quick fix I do not recommend Aikido. However, if you're patient and don't care about quickly becoming street effective by all means go for it.

I love Aikido and I really enjoyed my time that I spent training in it (I'm currently without dojo). IMO it's a great martial art and can be very practical and effective. It also incorporates beautiful and spiritual techniques/aspects, so there's a bit of something in there for everyone.
