papaschtroumpf Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 I think kenpo is somewhat unique in the karate family by having so many named "combinations". I don't use the name "technique" because it's somewhat vague. In shotokan (or at least the way my sensei teaches), a technique is a single "move", so if you block then kick then punch, it's 3 techniques in a row. The block, the punch and the kick will have a name of their own, but they're simply descriptive like "inside outstide block", "roudhouse kick", ... or their japanese equivalent which is just as descriptive...as long as you speak japanese or learn the words for "block", "kick", ...
parkerlineage Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Sloth, that's an awesome site! Quite helpful, if I may say so.What about Tiger, and Panther...we like the kitties!Anyway, thanks for putting those up. I knew them all (of course), but it's nice to have them written somewhere for me.Peace;Parkerlineage American Kenpo Karate- First Degree Black Belt"He who hesitates, meditates in a horizontal position."Ed Parker
DKizzle Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 I take Kenpo. We use english names for all the basics like "straight punch", "wheel kick", "inward block", but all the techniques are combinations of moves with cool names. The Cobra and the MongooseDance of DeathPlucking a Bird From The SkySeven Swords, etc.
Kenpo-Sloth Posted March 29, 2005 Author Posted March 29, 2005 Yes, Yes Don't forget the Leopard; and "The Tiger" is a whole nother thread!!Is "nother" a word I feel cheated DKizzle has 2 more swords than I have?? Kenpo Training may not be a Lifetime Journey, but it's Definitely the Journey of a Lifetime!!
italian_guy Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 We use original names both in karate then in TCC.After a while (it took me about 3 months) you get used to it...
DKizzle Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 You don't have a Seven Swords technique? 5 Swords? That's odd.

parkerlineage Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 No fair! What gives Tracy the right to give out two more swords?By the way, what/where are they?Plucking a Bird From the Sky? I know that one...1) Step back with right into a left neutral bow.2) Raise shotgun into offensive stance3) Line up barrel with point where bird will most likely be in a few moments4) Squeeze the triggerBye-bye, birdie (I hate that musical);Parkerlineage American Kenpo Karate- First Degree Black Belt"He who hesitates, meditates in a horizontal position."Ed Parker
DKizzle Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 At first you had me wondering what a "shotgun" was in Kenpo, then I read the rest It actually goes something like:For right punch:Step with left to 10 o'clock into right cat stance (with the right foot doing the cat thing), left parry. Step to 3 o'clock with butterfly palm strike. Step with left foot to 6 o'clock and grab shoulders. Shift into front stance, pulling opponent to ground. With right foot, scoop kick, heel strike, knee slam, punch. It goes something like that. I could have it a little bit wrong.
