martialman101 Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 Hi, im an apiring martial artist, well, to most experts standards that is. ive been doing martial arts for almost a year now and I am starting to doubt the quality of my school. the guys arent bad or anything, dont get me wrong, but I still doubt the lineage of the art (shaolin kempo) and am not satisfied with all points of its teachings, it doesnt go past the physical elements. By the way, its the USSD company, if youve heard of it. So i am looking for a new art. I would enjoy one with some philosophy and more eastern roots, but i dont know which new ones to consider. Please, i would like advice on a new art that might be nice to try. *do not strive to aquire what you want, but strive to want what you have already aquired* *DO not strive to win, but strive to improve*
martialman101 Posted March 24, 2005 Author Posted March 24, 2005 by the way, how does the rank system work on this website? *do not strive to aquire what you want, but strive to want what you have already aquired* *DO not strive to win, but strive to improve*
cathal Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 The rank system goes by how many posts you've made. If you aren't happy with the teaching I suggest you speak with your instructor. Letting him/her know that you are interested in the internals, spirituals, and philosphies of your style is important. If the instructor can't/doesn't want to do that, I suggest you locate another place to train. .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu

ravenzoom Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 Well first would you rather practice a striking or a grappling art?
italian_guy Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 My favorite art is karate. I tried karate (of course), kickboxing (I consider it American MA), Tai chi chuan (chinese) and JKD (chinese-american modern MMA) kali/escrima (Filipino in conjuction with JKD, inosanto method). In karate (Go ju ryu style), I have good teaching, good environment, good style quite complete (mostly striking traditional art with some grappling and ground fighting), and very low price.
seersin Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 I think first ya need to find out what kind of system ya want.Striking/or grappling art. Then do ya want an American art,Japanese,Chinese,Brazillian? Then we'll be able to help you a little more. ISAIAH 53:5
pers Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 I have only trained in Karate ,but kung fu is just as good ,All depends who is the teacher .all martial arts reach at the same destination only diferrence is the way getting there . Look for a good instructer ,it is most important thing as you are going to trust him in teaching you some thing of value ,other wise you may end up wasting many years of your time and money .there are lots of bad examples out there that you will do well to avoid them. never give up !
