senna_trem Posted February 24, 2005 Posted February 24, 2005 Any kid that good that young is either a prodigy or pushed into it by the parents. I vote for the latter. "I think therefore I am" Rene Descartes
AngelaG Posted February 24, 2005 Posted February 24, 2005 Geez, too much hate. Martial Arts is broad and it's more than just what's in your dojo. There's no hate here - it's just that that stuff isn't martial arts. That kid is superbly talented and would probably do very well in Olympic gymnastic floor work. Martial arts it ain't though. By the way the person on the video recorder (his mum I assume) could get a black belt in disabling people with her ear piercing shrieks!!! I find it odd to have so much hysteria in a MA tounament - ours tend to be a bit more..... dignified... than that. italian_guy Posted February 24, 2005 Posted February 24, 2005 I think there is an underlaying dilemma here... Should MA be a physical discipline that: a) anyone (indipendently of age, gender, and physical fitness initial level) can approch or... b) it is reserved for few gifted people? XMA tend to answer b), current approach to traditional martial art tend to answer a). Here is the problem with XMA; and although it generates spectacular outcome on the media tend to stop the propagation of MA as a whole.
rmclain Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 Jake Strickland looks really talented and dedicated. I'm sure it takes lots of hard work to do those tricks. While XMA takes lots of skill and work, it is more of a circus act than martial arts. It's the same way in the movies. But, movies are really meant to entertain people, not to teach or show good martial art. R. McLain
Kicks Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 AngelaG wroteThe only one I would take umbrage with is the "traditional" forms one - well that is nothing like and traditional kata I have ever seen. Does any one recognise the kata he was doing by the way? Video link of Jake: http://www.jakestrickland.com/newsite/videos/form5.wmv If this is the video AngelaG is referring to, then it is a very corrupted version of a Chang Hon form called Gae-Baek. It almost looks like it was filmed in a mirror. Jake opens up with stepping back with his left foot instead of his right. His first crescent block is to the left instead of right. He then heads off 90 degrees to the left instead of facing right then moving to the rear. And it gets worst from there. mattyj Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 how dare he xma up an itf form? its just similar enough to be recognisable... theyre supposed to be traditional, but it still looks showy to me you can also look at the 'sine waved' itf way of doing that pattern here: Gae-Baek
mattyj Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 See the traditional form here: http://www.natkd.com/movies/Forms/Ge-Baek.rm cool to see the kodang pattern on that site... ive never seen it because it got replaced by juche...
