At our dojo we do both empty-hand and Kobudo. Both are required for rank. So the kata we learn are:

Pinan

Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan

Seisan

Passai-do

Passai-gua

Gojushiho

Wanshin

Chinto

Kusanku

Hakutsuru

Ichiban, Niban

Uechi-Ryu Sanchin

And then for KOBUDO we have:

Shihonuke

Sakugawa no kun bojitsu

Choun no kun

Tokumine no kun

Matayoshi Shinpo no tonfa shodan

Ushi Komesu no nunchaku sho

Matayoshi Shinpo no tonfa nidan

Agena nunchaku

Hamahiga no tonfa

Agena no sai

Suis no kun ichiban

Kyan Chotoku no sai

Nicho kama: Shodan, nidan

Ko bo

Bo-tinbe

Bo-bo

Bo-tonfa

Bo-sai

Of course not ALL of them are required for black belt, we have leave room to grow!

You can see the specific rank requirements if you want:

Good question! I like to see what other people are learning.

Ummm....I am only a poor yellow belt, and therefore know very little....I know a black belt kata, but that's besides the point.

I know, so far:

Nihanchi Shodan

Pinan Shodan

Ichikyu

Nikyu

and some Bo kata that I can't remember the name of.

Wow you only practice 10 katas? In Shotokan? Or is that only for the testing and you practice more..because I know that shotokan generally practices about 20 something katas.

I'm Shotokan and we do 27 kata. I would suspect the post you are referring to is only describing the kata you need to get to Black belt, obviously to get to higher black belts you need to know even more kata.

Wow, I feel out of place. My school calls all the katas/forms by english names :o (well, most of them at least).

RANK/Kata(s)-Form(s) learned at that rank

WHITE/"White Tiger 1"

YELLOW/"White Tiger 2"

ORANGE/"White Tiger 3" and "1 Kata"

BLUE/"2 Kata"

2nd BLUE/"White Tiger 4(Cat 1)" and "Stature of the Crane"

GREEN/"White Tiger 5"

2nd GREEN/"Tiger Form(Cat 2)" and "3 Kata"

BROWN/"White Tiger 6"

2nd BROWN/"4 Kata" and "5 Kata"

3rd BROWN aka Black Candidate/"Mantis" and "Cat 3"

So that's 15 Katas/forms we must know before Black Belt. At Shodan the forms are "6 Kata" and "Hansuki" (sry about spelling). After that, I don't know.

I aggree we do one kata per belt till we hit brown.then 5 for each dan.

Heian shodan-nidan-sandan-yodan-godan.

bassai sho-kanku sho-tekki shodan (from brown to black

I don't train for belt color I train to survive on the street
