ninelivesarentenough Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 what kata are you expected to learn as you go from rank to rank in your school? i'll do my school to show what i mean. white to yellow- none yellow to orange- none orange to green- taikyoku green to blue- Gekisai blue to purple- Heian Yondan purple to red- bojutsu-sho red to brown1- bassai-dai brown1 to brown2- 5 animal kata brown2 to black- jukito-sho (spelling?) i don't know what's above that. i mainly want to get a feel for what are considered beginner, intermediate, and advanced kata and such. also just because for some reason i like seeing rank requirements.
Chado Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 (edited) I'll try to 'stay within the box' because my school has some variations for certain 'special circumstances' but since you wanted to know for rank requirements...we'll assume were talking about 'joe student off the street who wants to be a black belt as soon as possible (insert laughter here)' white belt - start learning gekisai dai ichi yellow - continue working on gekisai dai ichi gold - gekisai dai ichi orange - gekisai dai ni, start working on san chin sr. orange - perfect gekisai dai ni green - saifa purple - seiyunchin blue - Sanseiru brown - seipai black - depends This list again isn't quite correct since my sensei changes his mind about things alot...(saying you need to learn more than 'required' for your next belt) It takes a long time to get belts at my school... G95champ Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 Ok you can check out the following 2 sites. https://www.angelfire.com/wv2/wvka thats the way we do it. each style may be differant but usually the Heian series is always done first in any shotokan style. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."

billycamaro Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 This is to much to list but i'm a white belt in shitoryu and i know 5 katas and working on a 6th they are shihono , kihon kata ni , kihon kata go, heian shodon, heian nidan and i'm working on chino kata i've been working on them for awhile and i'm very good , will be testing soon and hope to learn more but to get your black belt it will take about 20 to 25 katas. It's not size of the dog in the fight ,it's the size of the fight in the dog.
1kickKO Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 Well good luck testing...hope ya pass and have fun with those katas. P.S. The Heian katas are the same as our pinans...only probably with a few minor variations.
vertigo Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 (all kyu ranks) 9th to 8th - Heian Shodan 8th to 7th - Heian Nidan 7th to 6th - Heian Sandan 6th to 5th - Heian Yondan 5th to 4th - Heian Godan 4th to 3rd - Tekki Shodan 3rd to 2nd to 1st - Choice of Bassai Dai, Jion, Kanku Dai, Enpi That is as far as I know for our belt testings "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." - T. S. Eliot
1kickKO Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 Wow you only practice 10 katas? In Shotokan? Or is that only for the testing and you practice more..because I know that shotokan generally practices about 20 something katas.
