italian_guy Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 Is JKD a purely striking art? I don't think so!
Rank7 Posted February 15, 2005 Author Posted February 15, 2005 JKD is a way that focuses on striking. i know its not purely striking but i am curious to see what others have taken after being satisfied with their skills in JKD,like did any one move on to another striking art?? or did they stick to JKD or move on to a grappling art? discuss.. SevenStar Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 that will likely vary depending on which school of jkd you are talking about. the SBG uses thai and bjj, where as "original jkd" is wing chun based. some of the jkd concepts guys, like burton richardson, have added bjj to their jkd curriculum. paul vunak has as well.
Rank7 Posted February 16, 2005 Author Posted February 16, 2005 My JKD consist of the simple Jun Fan gung fu kickboxing plus Kali or Eskrima. I like how they both seem to blend in unison . I wouldnt say im taking concepts or original sinse there isnt much wingchun in the curriculum but there is a bit and we do have muay tai but they are seperate classes which im sure they pass along in our sessions as well. SevenStar Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 sounds similar to where I used to train. we had jun fan classes, and on separate nights, they taught wing chun, muay thai and escrima. that's where I got my intro to thai boxing.
Nick_UKWC Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 Something to compliment whatever you felt was the weakest area of your game. Personally I think I'd chose something faster to learn that Aikido. "...or maybe you are carrying a large vicious dog in your pocket." -Scottnshelly
Rank7 Posted February 17, 2005 Author Posted February 17, 2005 By this you are saying that aikido is a long term art? I feel JKD can also be a longterm art since they say it is good to start JKD when you already have a foundation, as which i dont. Displays a small graphic image below your details in posts. italian_guy Posted February 17, 2005 Posted February 17, 2005 Rank7 is your JKD from Inosanto school/lineage? I took some JKD/Kali (Inosanto lineage) classes some time ago and I liked it. I think that with Aikido you need a relatively long time to get proficient in self-defence (longer than in JKD where self-defence is your main focus). If you look for a Grappling art with some self-defence application I suggest Ju Jitsu either Brazilian or Japanese. If you want an internal art with some grappling that has spiritual aspects (this maybe also a way to complement JKD) then, in this case, Aikido or Tai chi chuan may also be a good choice.
Rank7 Posted February 17, 2005 Author Posted February 17, 2005 Yea i am taking JKD from the inosanto lineage. What other lineage is there?? Displays a small graphic image below your details in posts.
