Application of Kata

Recommended Posts

:karate:

In many katas there is a series of moves following a knife hand blocks eg Kusanku were a pressing block is follows and then a sort of hand strike, Im told this is body level and whos apllication is not really Known, I personnally believe it is a visious strike to the troath and not to the side of the head or body ? .... :???:

Applications of katas are very diverse and different in many styles of martial arts. It could be both places, they would both be vital strikes.

Are you refering to the Shihon-Nukite (spear hand strike)? This move is usually done to either the solar plexus or the throat.

One application of the spear-hand to the throat move in a kata I've learned is to perform the strike, then press the finger tips down while jerking back, at least throwing the opponent off balance and perhaps breaking the clavicle bone. Just thought I'd throw that in...

if you are talking about the nukite (like pinan shodan) i do those ot the lower abdomen or the groin . If your talking about hte moves like in pinan yondan and kosokun (kushanku) where one hand comes by the eye brow and the other hand does a shuto strike i do those as either a block and strike to the throt or as a catching punch and strike to the elbow of the attacker . hope this helps .

You will get taught bunkai by your Dojo. The higher you get the more they teach you.

Its a simple method, look at the movement and use your imagination as to how you could apply it.

You might discover something no one else has

There have been some very good responses given.

Remember that one technique can have multiple applications. And any serious student will begin to see more and more ways to use that technique as they learn.

If you sit down for long enough and think hard enough you can think of your own application of Kata movements.

Bunkai is only coming from the imagination of your teachers and the developer of the Kata.

Dont accept that one movement has only one or two applications, open your mind, explore and create for yourself.

Its not blasphemy to do so and you may come up with some great ideas. Your teachers are human and so are you.

Look for ideas and try and apply it in sparring. If it works keep developing it. This is how it should be. Human creatively knows no bounds
