AnonymousOne Posted February 3, 2005 Posted February 3, 2005 You are right you wont change me and neither will psuedo science. The reason is, give me a fat person where a claim is that its a physical illness and I will lock them up for 6 months and only feed them a healthy diet and force them to exercise properly. They will lose weight. Put that to the scientific test!! 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul. Warriors are action takers and not action fakers. krzychicano Posted February 3, 2005 Posted February 3, 2005 ^ | | | Uneducated to the fullest potential. Such a sad sight to see especially since this is the so called information age and you refuse to educate yourself on the topics you are so called debating here. Truly sad indeed. This will be my last post on this thread because someone came here looking for help or advice to assist one of their friends and all this person did was turn it into a grudge match. If you did not have anything positive to offer to this subject you should have kept your ignorant self out of it. AnonymousOne Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 I guess we are lucky this isnt an actual dojo, where name calling is not possible for obvious reasons 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul. Nick_UKWC Posted February 7, 2005 Posted February 7, 2005 Anon, there are some people where the ethos you subscribe to holds true, and it makes me just as mad as it clearly makes you. People suing McDonalds for instance...you went through the door and you bought the Supersize BigMac meal, what did you expect to happen? However, to say that all people respond to diet in the same way or to say that all people who are over weight are just 'lazy' is out right wrong, as I suspect you know. You also seem to think the only type of eating disorder is to be overweight - another gross misjudgement. Perhaps you're not mentioning anything else (like the topic of the thread) because you don't have an easy formula to explain it away with. Infact I doubt having read your first post that you even saw what this thread was about before you launched into auto pilot and lambasted a whole host of people in situations you clearly don't understand. AnonymousOne Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 You are assuming that "science" is correct, only because its "science". science or excuseology... make of it what you will... Calling someone ignorant or uneducated doesnt change anything and neither do such attempts at insults bother me. If insulting is your only means of persuasion, I dont recommend you become a sales person. 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul. fangshi Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 Anonymous One , Are we not supposed to help those who need it ? Does it matter where you put fault or blame ? Do those who are lost or make mistakes not need help the most . I see the point you are making and a lot of the weight issues we see today are directly related to poor choices NOT everyone of them . Alot is pyhsiological and/or mental. These people need outside help from professionals . Cloud Dragon your job sounds deppressing. I am sure you are great at it but Wow . Sounds like you have alot of rough days at work. Kit Sometimes listening is the best way to help. Be a good friend . And get professional help for your friend and for you . There are lots of good groups and literature on supporting someone with an eating disorder. We are not so much individual beings as individual points of perception within one immense being.
AnonymousOne Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 fangshi I appreciate your civil manner in discussing this. Yes of course we should help people who need help and especially if we are able to render that help. To me it would be a crime to not help when one has the ability to do so. I have no problems with helping other people because it makes you feel good to be able to do so. I just sincerely believe that what I have said above is true. I am not one to just readily accept something just because some scientist says its true. At one time scientists told us that if a human being travels over 17 miles per hour that they will die and thus its dangerous to ride in trains. This was an actual scientific position long ago. Science has failed in many of its claims and of course things have been proven to be true. This is just one issue where I feel science is wrong. Personally I feel its easy to test the theory but putting someone in a situation, who is claimed to have a medical condition and force them to eat a limited calorie diet. That would be a good empirical test which science loves so much. My belief is never to accept things but test it. I have noticed scientists have made such claims about eating disorders but I have also noticed that they never actually put it to the firey test either. Therein lies my objections. Have you ever noticed how the victims of the WW11 holocaust in Nazi Germany and the prisoners of war by Imperial Japan, were all as skinny as a rake handle? With the thousands that were there, why did not some remain overweight? With the thousands, perhaps millions, surely some would have had this condition? Where are the overweight ones? Surely this horrible situation of the past would have provided great scientific evidence for this view. I do find this interesting. May you and your loved ones be blessed in all you do 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul. Warriors are action takers and not action fakers. senna_trem Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 Obesity: Caused by various things. Body type, some naturally put on weight more easily than others and have slower metabolisims. A lack of sex hormones in the body cause body fat to resist being "burned off" by exercise. Like a poster before said, Cushings Syndome is caused by hormones as well. You can't lump everything together into "science is trying to profit off of us by giving us pills." In some cases yes, but not in all cases. You know the village idiot in medival times? Well guess what, he wasn't stupid... he was mentally *! This is one of the things that science has revealed to us. People in the olden days just thought these so-called idiots were being difficult. It's not all about profit, it's about helping out people who need it. If you have so little faith in science I hope you don't drive a car, live in a house, go to the doctor, EAT FOOD, wear clothes, handle money or do anything pretty much every normal person who puts a little bit of faith in most science does. I really hope you're not an american or religious, because what I do love about science is that it can correct itself. P.S. If this was any other forum, I'd bring up the word troll concerning you... AnonymousOne Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 senna_trem You seem to be upset because someone has a different view to you. ninjanurse Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 At this risk of stirring the pot (although that is not my intention here) I have a few thoughts on this matter which all come from deeply personal experience. As a health care professional (sounds official huh!) I have talked to and treated all sorts of people with varying physical and mental health problems, and I have family members with varying physical and mental health issues as well. The one thing that I have learned after all these years is that you can't make people accountable for their own health-it DOES have to be a personal choice. This is not to say that all people have the control over their lives to do so or that simply being accountable for their health will cure them, but, we all have the capacity to take control of our lives and do what ever is necessary to help our bodies become healthy-even if that means we choose to take medicine to help us do that or seek counseling to overcome whatever barriers we have to doing so. To go along with this...some people choose to be unhealthy and their lifestyles create disease within their bodies which they then have no control over what-so-ever. In many cases, once the damage is done...it's done! In addition, taking a back-seat when it comes to healthcare seems to be a disturbing trend in our society which creates stereotypes that wrongly categorize those that choose to be healthy and struggle with physical and mental illness. And lastly, not everyone has attained that level of self-awareness (as defined by Maslow's Heierarcy of needs) that allows them to realize that it is they who are in control of their own destiny.
