I used to do Tae Kwon Do as a child, I got out of it in my teens, ate a typical american diet of grease and bread, (ate the same way while studying martail arts and I was a normal size) and began to gain alot of wieght, soI figure if I got back into it again I'll lose wieght.

Step one of my wieght loss regime is out of the way. I got enrolled into martial arts class for excercise and to learn how to move. Now I need a diet I can actually stick to.

Can't really eat lettuce for a salad, I gag on it trying to swallow, so that leaves that out, althought that would be one of the best things to eat to lose wiegt. So what do you think I should do?

Been drinking lots of water now, practicing Isshinryu lots. Cutting back on meat and eatting more fish. Instead of using salt, or marinades I've been using spices and what not.

Alright now you all know what you're trying to give advice to.

Thank you

Sounds like you are off to a good start. Exersize is very important. The biggest misconception about weight loss is that you need to eat like a rabbit or jump on some crazy fad diet . If you starve yourself your metabolism will slow , you will loose muscle which burns fat and loose energy which will take away from work outs. Your best bet is to choose food choices that will make the most of your calorie intake. Low fat , low sugar , low sodium . Think of a diet as a life style change . A perminate one , so you have to do things that make sense or you will not keep it up . Choose lean meat , poultry or fish with as much fat removed as possible . Choose high fibre low sugar carbs . Veggies are great but if your not big on that than don't over do it or force yourself to choke down anything because it is good for you. Make sure you have good variety in the foods you eat as to not get board with your food . Don't go too long without eating or you may eat too much or go for qiuck and easy which is usually not the best . My sifu used to say to eat until you are 3/4 full . Works for me anyways. If you have any health problems what so ever see a doctor.

The biggest thing is not to give up!

It is said that 3500 calories makes up 1 lb so do not get discouraged if it takes a while to loose a lot of weight.

If you want specifics on a diet geared to you I will need to know more. I can set something up for you just send me a private message . I would be happy to help . I am not a profesional dietition but I did take the course.

I would wish you luck but it is not about that.

We are not so much individual beings as individual points of perception within one immense being.

how about fruits? those should be good?

now, isshinryuwarrior. my mom knew someone who went on a crazy diet, where all she would eat is a lot of watermelons and a lot of pineapples. watermelon because of all the water and pineapple becasue its so acidic (incase you didnt know) it worked as far as my mom knows. if you are in a hurry to lose weight, i dont know if you want to try this. maybe other people can inform you more on it.

Im brasilian, but live in the united states. Really enjoying martial arts.

eating meat is fine, don't eliminate it if you don't want to. The biggest problem that most people make is that they try to make too many drastic changes too quickly. It's like quitting smoking cold turkey - you have withdrawals and temptations to go back to it. make the cutting a gradual process. This is extremely easy to do these days, as everyone has a low fat alternative to everything.

For example, if you are used to eating big, juicy t bone steaks and you love steak, cut back to a leaner sirloin. Still tastes good and has less fat. If you like whole milk, you can gradually use less and less of it, 3 days a week have whole, 2 days have 2% and gradually get to the point where you are drinking 2% daily. Next, make the change to 1%.

You said you were at one time living off of greasy food. If you are used to eating whoppers, cut down to a regular bk burger. After that, switch to a Mcdonald's burger, which has less fat than bk's.

The taste buds are sensitive to change. It can take a person up to six weeks to get used to the taste of a different type of food. Make the change gradually, and you will find it a lot easier and more enjoyable. And the results will be more permanent.

you can and should add fruit to your diet, but to only eat those things is not smart. you are lacking protein, which means in addition to losing fat, she also lost muscle. Consequently, she may have still looked fat in some areas even after losing the weight. Also, when you crash diet like that, guess what usually happens when you start eating regularly again.... you gain it back.

Not only that, but when you crash diet, it's possible to gain weight. When you don't eat enough, your body can go into starvation mode. it says to itself "holy crap, I'm starving - we're gonna die!" and it goes into conservation mode - it drops excess muscle - because muscle is more dense than fat and takes more energy to maintain - and your metabolism SLOWS DOWN. Also during this process, your fat cells begin to split, as the body is trying to find some way of nourishing itself. When this happens, you may actually gain weight. This is why you see people who go on a crash diet and gain 5 pounds.

Seven, my mom is a registered nutritionist, and she's never been able to explain it that well to me. thanx for the advice and info.

Hey I quit smoking cigarrettes cold turkey, if I can do that, I can lose wieght, and stay with karate, it's something that I think is fun, and that's what's important to excercise. The way i quit smoking is i went out bought a pipe and some tobacco, now every time I feel like smoking a cigarette I just smoke pipe instead.....That was a horrible joke. Oh well, I stooped low enough, my own fault. and I don't even smoke

anytime, bro. Yeah, you can definitely lose weight. you sound like you're on the right track. Something else that may be helpful is keeping a journal. record your current weight, training regimen, etc. and update it religiously. It helps some people psychologically, because it keeps them motivated. When you get discouraged, you can look back a few months and see how much you've progressed.
