busling Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 SevenStar, thanks for the clarification. I didn't claim to be an expert so it is good to get the low down. I based my answers on the results that I have obtained from attending my martial arts classes. They have certainly built a lot of muscle on me, however I started out quiet weak. In class we don't count out push ups, rather we told the type of pushup and then go ahead for a set time, eg. 30s, 1 minute. Usually I do the pushups as fast as I can (which for me is slow compared to the rest of the class). Train Hard --- http://www.combatcentres.com/
SevenStar Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 we do the same thing in my thai class typically, but in bjj we count them out.
Cmon Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Sevenstar what work out on the arm builds explosive power. If not pushups what other thing could you train at. Could it just be punching the air trying to do it hard/faster each time?
GhostlySykanRyu Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 SevenStar is right as usual...you want to train your fast-twitch muscle fibers with quick; explosive movements. In a similar situation, jogging slowly without any sprinting/running constantly can be counter-productive. To condemn the art of another is to condemn your own as well. We all have the same origin.
Maddwraph Posted January 20, 2005 Author Posted January 20, 2005 my guess is you misunderstood. here's a very basic break down of obtaining various results: low sets (1-3), low reps (3-5), very heavy weight: this builds power. medium sets (4-6), medium reps (6-, heavy weight: this builds mass high sets (6+), high reps (8-20), light - medium weight: this builds endurance. unless you are very small and very weak, 6 sets of 8 pushups will not help much in the mass department. Also, you are basically doing 48 reps of the same muscle movement - you are in the endurance category. When you finish, you may notice that you look "pumped". you will also notice that the pump is gone after a few hours. The "pump" is mere your muscles being flooded with blood from the preceeding activity you had. this is common with mass and endurance workouts. I call it the false pump. Definitely stick with the pushups, but not with the goal of gaining mass... sorry, im still not quite sure what you mean. im guess i am kind of weak, i am 5"10 and 158 pounds around. if i continue doing these 6 sets of of push ups (gradualy build up) it will not increase my arm power and chest power (i felt my chess getting stronger) i also heard it helps your triceps whihc im not sure what it is. i think its the under part of your arm. im just curiuos to if i should continue doing push ups, waht results will i get, and how will they help me? btw, thanks a lot for the responses. its really helpful so far. Im brasilian, but live in the united states. Really enjoying martial arts.
