Question? I need upper body strength,

I am having trouble relaxing my shoulders during combinations. I am not only female but stand only 5'2. I feel like when I work combinations in the dojo, ( and have been corrected), that I tense up and cruch at the shoulder. My opinion on this is poor upper body strength. Is there any suggestions on building more strength to help me relax my shoulders?

I don't think its lack of upper body strength. Its is actually what most beginners experience (I used to do that too). With some more training, you will mostly be conditioned to relax your shoulder during the movements.

Yes, I'm very weak in the upper body, but I have access to a gym. Any gym fanatics out there who could give me some tips as well?

Err, I agree, tensing your shoulders is just a habit that you need to break, not something lack of strength causes.

If you persist in thinking upper body strength is the cause, let me know, I don't feel like writting an elaborate post right now.

I agree that it is not a lack of upper body strength, however since you are aware of that you are doing it you can change it. All you have to do is think about your shoulders relaxing and they will. This to will take practice. Once you realize that you are tense then begin to think about your shoulders being relaxed and it will happen, when they become tense again then repeat the process and it will eventually become second nature.

I had a problem with tense shoulders too. I just try to do some shoulder rolls before class, and just make a point after each exercise to make sure I haven't tensed up. And, after only a week or two, I pretty much stopped having the problem. Every once in a while I'll still do it, but not nearly as often as before.

That said, there are a lot of good exercises for improving upper body strength that, properly done, will only improve your overall conditioning. I'm just skeptical that it will help the shoulder tension.

Good luck!
