GrooveChampion Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 I am going to start MA in jan. or feb. and I want to go ahead and start a streching, sit-up and push-up routine (maybe something else like weight lifting). So where do I start? How many reps etc. etc. I am 14 (Turn 15 in a month), about 6' 2'' but I don't know what my weight is. I am a little over weight though. My doctor said my diet is fine. I don't know what MA I'm gonna do yet but there isn't much around here. Hopefully something that has nothing to do with katas or forms. The Saint Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Well, your a big guy at 15. The weight should matter at this point because yul'' probablly grow somemore around 18/19. I would start running to get your wind up. Then just do 3 set of 10 pushups and situps. After it gets easy increase the push ups and sit ups, becareful not to overtrain at yuor age as muscle development is at it's highest peak during the teenage period. Good luck. As for Kata's and forms, all the stances, kicks, punches and blocks will help you become a better fighter. I love to spar and have realized that patterns help basic movement which is good for power and to find openings when punches and kicks are being fired at you. Hawkeye Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Welcome to KF! It never hurts to get a jump on conditioning. The Saint had some good suggestions for getting started. Here are some other ideas: jumping jacks, arm rotations, squats, lunges, leg lifts, side sit-ups, jumping straight up while bring your knees up as high as they can, and anything else you can dream up that gets you moving. Ask a Phys. Ed. teacher for suggestions. All of these things don't require any special equipment and can be done inside or out. Just remember to take the time to warm up before you stretch and exercise (so as to reduce the chance of injuring yourself!) and stretching at the end of a workout goes a long way. Good luck! GrooveChampion Posted December 21, 2004 Author Posted December 21, 2004 Thanks for the reply's. I forgot to mention that I have asthma. But I have it well controlled. "No. That's where I keep my midget, now leave before I call the Jewish."
Kaminari Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Asthma never stopped me. You'll be able to do more and more the more you do, but don't overdo it, or your asthma will kick in. Make sure to practice/exercise in an area free from things like sawdust in the air which will upset your breathing. Have your inhaler (if you have one) near just in case, but you should be fine.
Kaminari Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 I forgot to ask: What MA are you starting?
GrooveChampion Posted December 21, 2004 Author Posted December 21, 2004 I forgot to ask: What MA are you starting?I haven't decided yet. I hope I can find something like gung fu. There's this place-High Desert Martial arts-that teaches kick boxing, street fighting and knife fighting. I might go there. "No. That's where I keep my midget, now leave before I call the Jewish."
