hey i went and tried a kickboxing class for the first time today and i loved the workout. only downside was i was the only guy besides the instructor. however ther were only 3 students so i could be jumping to conclusions to quick. are your kickboxing classes pretty mixed up or are they all male or female? any ways it was an hour long classes where we jumproped hit the bags did ab workouts then pushups and more on the heavy bags. i almost puked at the end. i just wanna know what your classes are like? are they crowded? and is your instructor strict or laid back?

In my old kickboxing class we were 7-8 to 16 peoples (depending on the period) mostly guys lets say 75% guys, 25% guls... the addendance was ok for the size of the room. The instructor was quite strict, no joking, no talking exept to ask question to the instructor.

You did not do drills in pair (or sparring ok not for you if it was the first time but what about the others?)? This may be strange but probably this lessons was special... sometimes we also did bag work session.

Our KB workouts are not that strict, but you have to pay attention. He does drills like punch the bag as fast as you can until he claps then you stop immediatly. If you dont stop, you have to do 10 pushups for every punch after the clap. I really learn alot from the class, without it being like boot camp all over again. But that is the kind of person my instructor is. Hes a great teacher. Good luck with your classes. Let us know how your other classes go.

is it american kickboxing, muay thai, or more of a cardio kickboxing?

i wanna say its american kickboxing beacuse he was showing me how to throw elbow and knee shots on the bag. he advertises the class as a real kickboxers class. we did alot of cardio stuff but im not sure thats his point. its a pretty small gym by the way it has a ring about 6 heavy bags a speed bag and a small space with bench press and dumbells and thai pads(whatever those are). im just gettin nervous about paying the 3 months special and having it be just bags and no actual fighting. im hoping next class will have more males in it. the instructor was a pro kb fighter for 10 years so im pretty sure i could train to actually compete. how long was it before yall began to spar with a partner?

you should be drilling with a partner right away. it may be about 3 months or so before you spar, though. But that depends - different instructors run their class different ways.

you just want to be sure that you will do some drilling and sparring, and not just bag and pad work. if after a few classes you haven't done any partner drills or haven't seen anyone else do any, I'd question him about it.

About the same experience but the first week they start to go over the technique as solo, from the second week drills with partner... after two/three months light contact sparring and conditioning drills, after 1 year you can go gradually from light to moderate contact, after 2 years, but I haven't reach that point, you go full contact.

that sounds about what I'm used to, except for the sparring intensity. two years? After one year, you should be conditioned and trained enough to have your first fight.

Probably it was because my school was inside a gym and most of people did not actually train for competition. We had only one or two potential competitors (the school just opened when I started).

I run my KB class with a laid back attitude as far as strictness goes. Now all the students know that I run in very intense when it comes to doing are mitt drills, thai pad drills and leg kick shield drills and they love it. I set up stations sometimes to make the class different and the stations consist of thai pad work, mitts, tire jumping, shadow boxing with weights, leg kick shield, tip tap sparring and I normally will play some up beat music while I run the students threw the stations. Here is one drill that I do that really kicks everyones butt and they love it. I put a kickboxer on the floor, and then I have 3 others one holding mitts, one with thai pads, and one with a kicking shield. I time this normally first round 1 minute and then on their second time I put them in for 2 min. The people holding the pads advance towards the kickboxer, the kickboxer can use punch combos on mitts, they can punch or kick the thai pads depending on how the holder comes at the kickboxer and they can punch kick or knee the kicking shield. Now here is the fun part, if they do not get a good hard strike in the holder keeps advancing on them and at the same time the other holders are crowding the kickboxing. Normally after a good hit a 3 second count is giving before the holder advances again. The drill gets crazy and the students love it.
