karatekid1975 Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 Since going back to my old TKD dojang, I am re-testing for my red belt. I did make fast friends with someone in the beginning of the summer. We have been best friends in MA ever since. We give each other support, work on stuff before/after class, we help each other out when we get in the "slump," ect. We kept telling each other that we will test for red together. To be moral support for each other. One reason she wanted me to test with her is because she never had her red and I did .... among other reasons. I got the "ok" to test next saturday. She was out for two weeks due to an injury and she moved. So, she can't test. I saw her tonight, and she asked me if I was testing. I said yes. She said that she couldn't. I felt really bad for her. Anyways, I was thinking of putting off my test till January (when she tests). She gave me the "wanna wait for me" guilt thing, but she said that she didn't mind if I tested now, and that I should. But I feel like I am betraying her (if I go through with this test and not wait) What should I do? Laurie F
steveb Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 Since testing is available to you in Jan. and you said you would test together I would wait. After all it is more about the journey than the destination, and the journey is more fun w/ friends. If it was a much longer wait I would have to think about it. Res firma, mitescere nescit
kimura_guy Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 I agree with steveb, I would wait also. Jan. isnt that far off. Good luck to you and your friend. KG It's better to be judged by 12, than carried by 6.
Shane Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 Its pretty much up to you, as long as you keep training hard, it does not really matter if you test or not at this point. A True Martial Arts Instructor is more of a guide than anything, on your way to developing the warrior within yourself!!!!!
aefibird Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 (edited) I'd suggest that you wait - January isn't far away. At least you'll have an extra month to practice and also you'll not 'spoil' your friendship by testing without your friend. If you wait you'll make your friend happy, but if you test you'll beat yourself up about it and feel guilty that you didn't wait for her. I know that it's only a belt... but it is nice to have a buddy to test with. A friend of mine and I did that - we waited to test with each other for each of our belt tests, and did so right up to out 1st Dan test. We're hoping to be able to take out 2nd Dan together too. Good luck with whatever you decide to do! Good luck with your red belt test too, for whenever you decide to take it. Edited December 10, 2004 by aefibird "Was it really worth it? karatekid1975 Posted December 10, 2004 Author Posted December 10, 2004 Thanks all. I will talk to her tomorrow. She is in a tourny that I couldn't be in, but I'm going to support her, so I'll let you know what we decided on Laurie F

I did talk to her again before the tourny (she got ripped by the way ... she did really well, in my opinion, but didn't place). She gave me "wait for me" thing again, but she told me to test. My boyfriend told me not to wait, also. Everyone is telling me not to wait. But I feel I should. I am still stuck HELP!!!! Laurie F
aefibird Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 I'd say to go with what you feel. If you're being given conflicting advice then go with what you feel is the right thing to do. I hope that it all works out well for you, whatever you decide to do. "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." The Beautiful South - The Rose of My CologneSheffield Steelers!
Nick_UKWC Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 Are any of the people telling you not to wait involved with your MA? You know waiting is the right thing to do really. "...or maybe you are carrying a large vicious dog in your pocket." -Scottnshelly
ZR440 Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 Laurie, If you are ready, do it. You can use that learning experience to help her for her test. It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
