I’ve been jumping around different forums trying to figure out what MA I want to take. I mainly just want a good self defense. Someone suggested JKD, I know it’s not a style, so please... :) There is a school close to my house and I was wondering if anyone has heard of this instructor before, Willie Wilson III? http://www.jkddallas.com/Instructors.htm

Is JKD a good MA for someone who has never taken an MA before? Should you have some experience with something else before you start JKD? I don’t want any short cuts but I don’t want an MA that takes 10 years to be able to use...like Aikido. No offence Aikido people. Does JKD take forever? Is it complicated? I like the idea of taking a little of everything and combining it. Any help would be appreciated.

I did JKD for just 1 months so I'm not entirely qualified to give my point of view but anyway...

I studied JKD in combination with kali escrima (Dan Inosanto Method) I see from the webpage that is the same lineage of the one I studied (both come from Inosanto).

Is JKD a good MA for someone who has never taken an MA before?

Yes it can be your first art.It wasn't my first art for me but there were some absolute beginners in the class

Should you have some experience with something else before you start JKD?

No they start from the early basics.

Does JKD take forever?

No, it is fairly efficient for self defence. We did also case study self defence applications. It is somewhere in between a self-defence course and a formal martial art, it is formal because they teach you the basics with some accuracy but they also teach you self defence application like in a self-defence course.

Is it complicated?

From the little I could see I can say no it is not an acrobatic style it has no forms (except if you do also kali).

My 2 eurocents.

Check him out. I've heard nothing but good things about him and his guys. You said he's close to your home right? GO FOR IT ! My instructor met up with one of his hardcore students and he can vouch that they're good at what they do.

you scythe with it!!!!!!
