MFGQ Posted November 22, 2004 Posted November 22, 2004 Hi to everyone! I have a problem, i have done several martial arts, some of them for a long time like shotokan karate for 7 years and some for just a while to see how they were like, right now i am practising goju-ryu karate, but a lot of friends that are doing muay thai or BJJ tell me to go to practice with them, i would like that a lot, but i want what is more effective as a self defense and right now i really dont know what to do. thank you!
MFGQ Posted November 23, 2004 Author Posted November 23, 2004 which 2? and i dont know i can do that, because i dont have enough time
ramymensa Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 All these choices can be good, as every style you've mentioned can be useful as a selfdefence one. It's important to train well and have a good instructor. The rest is discussion If you've already trained Karate you can stay there, or if you'd like a change go for MT. See all your options, try to know the instructors and your coleagues, the conditions in the training hall and all other details. Eventually one would seem the best offer. Think you are a client and yuo MUST be pleased with everything. When you find the best choice just go and train seriously. You'll become good and even efficient World Shotokan Karate
italian_guy Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 I think you can stick to goju ryu karate, maybe it is not the most efficient self-defence art but it is very complete and it is a solid base. If you want to cross-train you can choose one of the two you mentioned, with muay thai you will add extra striking skills and with BJJ you will have extra grappling skills. However since Goju ryu is mostly a striking art, if I was you I would cross-train in BJJ, but both solutions are good.
VinnieDaChin Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 cross train bjj, if you want different striking, definitely check out the muay thai.
Shane Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Thats a hard one because muay thai and bjj are both awsome!!! If I was you I would train muay thai to develop awsome stand up fighting techniques, muay thai covers distant fighting along with clinch fighting and some takedowns. Then in time or when you can afford it and make time for it add the BJJ to your fighting game. Those two together make a good combo. A True Martial Arts Instructor is more of a guide than anything, on your way to developing the warrior within yourself!!!!!
