Kicks Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 My son is trying to set a new 20GB hard drive as the master drive (C drive) but the PC continues to read the orginal 2GB as the master even though he set it as the slave. If he removes the 2GB it won't even detect the 20GB drive. He has set the jumpers for the 20GB to be the master, and he says they are set correctly. aefibird Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 Sorry, you lost me about 6 words in... Hope you get it fixed, though. I know how annoying pc troubles can be. "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." The Beautiful South - The Rose of My CologneSheffield Steelers!
ramymensa Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 Well ... don't know. Let go the other one, and clean the 20 gigs hard. Put it as master and instert the Windows CD for installation. It should pick up and go. Maybe he could just leave the old 2 gbs alone and work with the bigger one. That's what I would do. Still I'm not a specialist. Hey guys ... where are you? P.A.L Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 change the plugs on the hard disk cable, IDE cable out of mother board has 2 pluge for 2 devices ,I think first one will be master and second one slave, you still need to set the jumpers though, also check the BIOS before boot up, go inside and there should be some option about IDE device detection. he is on a right track just change these stuff he should be able to get it work.
iron duckee Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 mind also, that the new drive that you're trying to set as primary needs to be formatted with the system files contained within it. first thing you want to do is connect that new drive as the slave. start up as usual, then format that new drive. afterwhich, then you can swap 'em around.. -- iRON DUCKEE
kchenault Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 Why does he want to switch the drives? Why not just run the new one as a slave, and keep his OS untouched on the old one. No partitiioning to deal with and it sounds like he has already accomplished that setup. Just curious. Ken ChenaultTFT - It does a body good!
iron duckee Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 thas true and all..but i believe his [son's] original intention was to set the new drive as primary. and regardless of whether that drive is the primary/slave, it would still be recommended that the drive be partition.. personally, i would juss add it on as a slave .. unless, of course, that new drive is a faster one. - iRON DUCKEE

Shito Ryu Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 I personaly wouldn't Buy anything smaller then 100 gigs. But thats just me. BTW would switching the OS drive form master to slave screw things up??? Did you try formating the 20 gig, then installing the OS onto the 20 gig? Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate....
