Sinar89
hey, i know that alot of people ask this but i'll go ahead and ask... what martial arts would you suggest for me. I'm 15 (prolly won't start till 16) and i'm right now 5'8". my weight right now is 175 and i'm in ok shape but i'm not starting karate intill i'm in peak condition so i guess that doesn't really matter about my weight now. anyways, i'm looking for a martial arts that fights, not grapples. i don't think tea kwon do would be that could for me cause their mainly feet. i don't mind using feet but i'm mainly a puncher. also, if possible, i would like a Japanese based martial arts but thats only if its posibble. thats the main things i'm looking for. thanks alot
foreveryoung001
As a TKD fanatic, I will be no good to offer advice onstyles, but I will encourage you to find a good school and just start going. It sounds liek you are in well enough shape to begin training without a problem. If you wait until you are in "peak" physical shape, you might be waiting a long time. Begin your training, with whatever style you finally choose, and I gauruntee that if you committ yourself fully to it, then you will get in shape. Student: "Why did you hit that guy with a chair? Why didn't you use your karate?"Master: "Hitting him with a chair was the only karate I could think of at the time."Lesson: Practice until you don't have to think. Beiner
Go into kickboxing itll get you into shape and teach you how to strike. Btw grappling is a way of fighting aswell seeing how 75% of fights end up on the ground.
italian_guy
You can try karate. But don't wait to be fit. You'll become fit by practicing it! Kickboxing it is also a good choice. It is less traditional and less complete but sice you practice less techniques and there are no katas you can learn it faster.
doubletwist
Well, regardless of style, the quality of the school is probably the most important factor. A bad school of a good art will do you more harm than good in the long run, so focus on checking out at least several of the schools in your area, and watching [and/or participating in] at least one class of each [many schools will give you a free class]. If the school won't even let you watch a class, you probably don't want to go there. I may be biased, but based on your statements, I'd say American Kenpo could be a good match. It isn't what you'd call a "Japanese" art, but it was designed with the best parts of many MA's put together based on scientific principles. There's a lot of self-defence based work. We do some kicking but not a lot of the high/spinning stuff that TKD styles do. There are a lot of punches/strikes, and depending on the school, they may also offer some BJJ [grappling] to round off the training, although it doesn't focus on the ground fighting. American Kenpo is also known for it's hand-speed, and ability to deal with multiple attackers. Here are a couple links with history/info: http://www.americankenpo.com/dedication.html http://www.kenpokarate.ie/default.htm I have really been enjoying Kenpo, although at the moment I'm having trouble putting it into words DT - "Failure is the opportunity to begin again, more intelligently." Shorinryu Sensei
Sinar89...like I tell everybody else that asks the same question as you..."What style is best for me?"...the first thing that you need to tell us is where you live (city/state/country), and if possible, what systems are available in your area? For example...if you live in Houston, Tx, or any other large city, you will have just about everything available to you. However, if you live in Podunk, Montana like I do, then your choices are limited. It doesn't do us any good to recommend a system to you that isn't availble in your area. Make sense? *taking off my Mr. Sock ears now* My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!" Vito
grappling is fighting... and you can count on needing to know it sooner or later.
