ncole_91 Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Hi everyone, I am new to karate, and whenever I do the seiza position, it hurts my legs, like I am squishing them so I can not be in this position for a long time. Has this ever happened to anyone? How can I help it? Thanks in advance, Nicolas
foreveryoung001 Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 I am not familiar with this name, but we might have something similar by a different name in TKD. Could you describe the position, and where your legs are hurting? Student: "Why did you hit that guy with a chair? Why didn't you use your karate?"Master: "Hitting him with a chair was the only karate I could think of at the time."Lesson: Practice until you don't have to think.
ncole_91 Posted October 15, 2004 Author Posted October 15, 2004 Its (in my dojo) a posistion we sit in to *meditade* or focus before and after class. You sit with you legs under your thighs, and your legs are about 2 fists apart http://www.osloaikido.no/img/TheLastSamuraiOppvisning190104/Seiza%20006.jpg there is a picture.. Nicolas
foreveryoung001 Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Okay, yes we do have a similar position for meditating before class. Can you describe the "squished" feeling or where you are feeling the pain? Is it in a particular muscle group or is it in a joint? Depending on what and where you are feeling the pain, there might be some different reasons for the pain, and perhaps some stretches or exercises you could do to help relieve your discomfort. The more specific you could describe where the pain is, the more it might help. Student: "Why did you hit that guy with a chair? Beiner Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Strech, if your new to it and your muscles arnt used to the movements and motions, youll need to streach more.

It would have to be my thighs and calfs the most.... it feels like someone is sitting on them, which in turn that is happening... Edited October 15, 2004 by ncole_91

foreveryoung001 Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Okay. it sure sound like a good regular stretching routine will help out. There are many stretches that will effectively target your thighs and calves. Your instructor should be able to help you put together a good stretching routine, and I would do it at least once a day. And yes, I would suggest sitting in this position as often as you can. This will help train your muscles, stretch them out, and should, over time, help to relive your discomfort. Beiner Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Yeh do the position for as long as you can bare it. then relax and strech out for a little bit, When I started ju jitsu, I was aching all the time I even made a post about it. Now Im usually okay. ( lol except when my sensi fell ontop of me after a move, shoulder to the solar plex)
ncole_91 Posted October 16, 2004 Author Posted October 16, 2004 ok, now I am scared to do the posistion because I ws talking to this guy, and by sitting on your heels, you can destroy your knee cap and need surgery...
