yan
hey... is there anyone who has any idea regarding taking baths after a strenous excercise or practice session? I am just new in the martial arts and when I ask other practitioners they have different oppinions on the topic. some say you should take a bath right after the activity and others say to rest for a few minutes or even a few hours before taking a bath. I don't know which one is correct and if there is any scientific explanation for wether taking a bath right after or resting first before taking a bath after a strenous excercise or practice session. It is better to have a knife and never need one. than not having one and really need one.
Rich67
Hmmm....I would think (not a scientifically based opinion, mind you) that this may be one of those "old wive's tales"....don't eat and swim within 10 minutes, don't have sex before a big game, etc... I don't see what the problem would be. In fact, I would think a warm or hot bath after straining the muscles would be very relaxing and may aid in recovery time...reducing muscle soreness, etc. I like to soak in the jacuzzi after working out hard, and I know I feel a lot better after doing so. yan
thanks alot for your advice rich. but i just want to get your opinion on this. a fellow martial artist told me that after a strenous activity and you sweat. your pores open up and if you take a bath the cold might get in and you might get muscle spasms. what can you say about this statement? is it logical? It is better to have a knife and never need one. than not having one and really need one.
Red J
I'm with Rich on this one. I've read some running articles on how some people run and get right into a cold bath to prevent inflamation. In fact the guy who won the silver in the marathon, Meb, does his training and then wades into an ice cold river for twenty minutes or so. I guess this would serve the same purpose as an athlete immediately icing a body part. I don't think that taking a normal bath would be a problem. I would suggest using soap. I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.

A cold or ice cold bath after a strenuous workout might not be a good idea. I think the fact that the "water gets into the pores and causes the spasms" is nonsense . Muscles may cramp because of excessively cold water, but who takes a cold bath??? The warm bath is therapeutic, and may help muscle recovery. Taking an ice bath for certain body part may work to stem swelling, but that's about all. Mixed Martial Artist
Red J
I think the fact that the "water gets into the pores and causes the spasms" is nonsense I think I saw that happen to Sponge Bob once. Yeah, I don't recommend the ice bath. Too cold. Brrrr. I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.

aefibird
I like to take a warm bath after a strenuous workout, especially if I've been doing a lot of weight training, as I find that it helps me relax and prevent muscle soreness/stiffness the next day. I wouldn't want to take an ice bath, though...brrrr.... "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." The Beautiful South - The Rose of My CologneSheffield Steelers! Topic
Taking a warm bath is fine but taking a cold bath is nto fine, heres the reason why. Your are hot after a hard workout and when the cold water hits your body can probasbly do some damage to your body. Think of it as a hot metal grill, its hot, and thats why they say not to put freezing water on it to clean ti when its hot cuz it can crazk, the same goes for your body, thats my logic.
