Haidong Gumdo.

Recommended Posts

Have any of you heard of Haidong Gumdo? It's not too big in the U.S. Its the first martial arts that I have ever tried. Its a quite hard sword fighting style. Haidong Gumdo have some hard stances like soto-se, wich really work your legs. You should check it out at https://www.hdgd.org

There will always be the Jackie Chans and Jet Li's who will come along and dazzle us with their screen antics. But Bruce Lee was a seeker of knowledge, a true master of the fighting arts and philosophy.

We do some Haidong Gumdo at our school. Our school is a Tang Soo Do school.

I know some of the material at around the 6th gup level. (Ssang soo gum bup yuk bon, and Ssang soo gum bup chil bon)

I'll be officially starting as a 10th gup soon. That should be interesting.

I impatiently wait for a school to come to the Kansas City Metro area..........it is my dream ART. I would love to study this sword art. I would drop everything else.

I've heard of it. Sounds pretty cool, and if I wasn't in Kuk Sool Won, I'd have to check it out.

But that's one of the things I love about Kuk Sool Won... I'm learning the Korean straight sword as part of my KSW curriculum. I don't have to go take another class somewhere else to learn various weapons. After the straigtht sword, I'll learn the double short swords.

In my style, Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan, we have exposure to different weapons at the various dan levels. I am currently a 4th dan, so I've had an opportunity to take part in most of the standardized weapons training offered directly in our system. We also have access to the full Hai Dong Gum Do system if we so chose.

At Cho Dan, we practice dando (short dagger) hyung and self defense.

At Ee Dan we practice bong (long staff) hyung, and short staff self defense

At Sam Dan we practice Hai Dong Gum Do hyung

At Sa Dan we practice Chinese Broad Sword hyung

At O Dan we practice Chinese Spear hyung

At Yuk Dan we practice Tai Chi Sword

Kendo is a branch of Haidong, so basicly kendo is a shittier version of Haidong. Haidong is much more powerfull, and puts a helluva lot of strain on your body, like im the Sotosei(SP?) stance.

Not saying I'm an expert or anything, but that doesn't sound the least bit accurate to me. Some proof might make that statement somewhat more believable.

I think PJ might be talking about Kumdo, which is almost identical to Kendo, just with a Korean name. Haidong Gumdo is an original Korean sword art that was created for melee style battle, in other words, to take on multiple opponents at once. I have the video from Turtlepress and it is quite the sword art. Very fluid and powerful.

Nope, im talking about Haidong Gumdo.

Haidong uses mostly large wide swings from the center of your back going through to about your belt. It also has large arching swings that go from above your shoulder, all the way to your opposite ankle.

And Kendo is a branch of Haidong.

I have a tournament tommorow, I'll try and post some pictures.
