Dragonfly
I don't know why.. but it seems like push-ups require just as much, if not more effort not than when I started. I do 50 push ups , every other day. 10, wait for ten seconds, do ten more, until 50. Been doing so for about.. 2 months now, I am substantially bigger musclewise, and stronger, I curl 40 lbs each arm now. I can do a few pull ups... triceps are huge, push ups are like always.. do you think I should take a break for say.. 4-5 days and see if my muscles recooperate? I know alot about a little bit, and a little bit about alot.

TheDevilAside
Resting for a week or two won't do you any harm. Give it a try. "If you're going through hell, keep going." - Sir Winston Churchill
CloudDragon
Because of the numerous muscles involved, it will take a while to become better with pushups. I would take a few days off, and vary the tempo and depth within your sets to work different muscles more and less until they become easier. Rich67
What you're experiencing could be a couple of things. Number one, you may be stagnant because you are gaining muscle size and therefore have more weight to effectively push up. Or, you could be mildly overtraining. If you are working the chest and tris too hard, you may not be giving them enough recovery time. Take some extra days off in between, or even about a week or two off from any lifting. More is not always necessarily better when it comes to lifting. Mixed Martial Artist
dear john
at the begining of the summer I maxed out at 55. I did this every night with little advncement. I decided that me bulking like I was, did not better my performance in class. i stopped completly, no push ups. i started running 5 miles every other day and i punched at a punching bag . now i can do 63 push ups. people think im stronger, but it is just my endurance. i could be wrong, but this is how my body works. the funny thing is that i know im wrong and i know your right, yet you keep argueing like it will change my mind. you should really know, you dont have to be right to win:)
Dragonfly
Rofl, ok I came down with a BAD case of the stomach flu right after I posted this, and I just belted out 50 push ups without stopping and with no problem. I just had to take a break, my muscles weren't fresh they were bogged down. I know alot about a little bit, and a little bit about alot.
Vito
that will happen if you never give them a rest. "If an injury has to be done to a man it should be so severe that his vengeance need not be feared." -Machiavelli
Ironberg
Every once in a while, max yourself out on pushups. In the meantime, go with a comfortable figure, or split that figure into sets that combined are larger than done in one set. If you are lifting weights as well, you have to remember that your arm muscles require at least 24 hours of rest before doing pushups again. I had the same problem, this is one of the philosophies I tried. I've tried so many things over the past year that I can't remember them all.
