Little Dragon Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 some instructors teach only for the money and teach you jack shyt.On the other hand some teach more for the pleasure of handing down their skills more than then money.Be careful on which school you decide to join. ''I know what your thinking.........did I shoot you 3 times? or did I shoot you 472 times?''
WapCaplet Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 I am interested in learning martial arts for the physical conditioning, self defense, spiritual, and discipline. I want something that teaches punches, kicks, and weapons. Wow. This is rare. It's not often that you hear someone give really good reasons for wanting to take a martial art. I'm impressed with the thought you have put into this, Tao Hodos. I think you will have a very enriching and fullfilling martial art journey. Most people start by asking what "the best" martial art is and often use fighting as their excuse. "Which martial art is the best for fighting?" I bet less than 10% of those people actually get into fights at all. Most people don't. It's only the media and hollywood that sensationalize fighting and make us seem to think that it happens every day. Anyway, just wanted to say that I'm impressed with the reasons you've given and the attitude you have about it. You'll go far. Good luck! Wap P.S. I'll throw in my vote for Shotokan karate, primarily because that is what I take. And it has all those aspects you mentioned. To be fair though, I think almost all martial arts have those aspects you mentioned. "Fighting fighting. Same Same""But you know karate!""Someone always know more..."
47MartialMan Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 I am interested in learning martial arts for the physical conditioning, self defense, spiritual, and discipline. I want something that teaches punches, kicks, and weapons. Please help me make this decision. Physical conditioning... most arts have this Self defense................some arts lack this, or lack a complete structure of Spiritual......................depnds on what is determined as Discipline....................most arts command this for a level of proficiency Punches......................one technique to a endless arsenal Kicks..........................ditto Weapons....................."traditional" can not be applied in modern defense. It can come down to opinion, I agree with Seven Star on this..... There....no "one-liner"
italian_guy Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 I think that TSD is quite a good art to start with, I don't know if they will teach you weapons... If you look for something more spiritual maybe a chinese system is better, something like Shaolin kung fu. Northern shaolin has weapons, kicks punches, throws, fast movements, chi na and in some school also chi kung exercise.
